How do slightly older (late 20s/ early 30s) 1Ls fair in Ann Arbor? I love the vibe from Michigan’s promotional materials, and I’ve only heard great things about it, but I’m worried about having a social/ dating life not in a city. (Also worried that I’ll want to hibernate all winter, coming from the south )

On the plus side, A2 is less than an hour from Detroit, and A2 itself is chock full of the smartest people who've ever lived in a concentrated space together. Dating-wise, I think you'll be fine.PostNihilist wrote:+1Teacher wrote:malysh wrote:Also a 1L. Happy to answer questions

I get the hibernation thing, though. Almost all my apps are at northern schools, so I'm stocking up on those after-Christmas sales.

Just opened the official acceptance package with an awesome hand note from the ad officer... I don't know if they write something to everyone but it felt really good! And Michigan is making everything to make me love them and forget for one second my aversion for the midwest...

I did as well. Didn’t understand why either, but kinda glossed over itPlatopus wrote:Anyone else get an email from the financial aid office regarding the school's disclosures re:cost, student outcomes, etc? Haven't received anything like this from other schools so I'm a bit confused.

Re: Michigan Law c/o 2021 Applicants
Well our average age is up at 25 this year, so I imagine this means quite a few of us are in our mid 20s- 30s. Overall, it feels like there's a lot of things to do in Ann arbor for an older crowd. Lots of great events come through here, there are a lot of laid back bars, etc. There is pretty much every grad program imaginable so the dating pool is much wider than just the law school. A lot of the orgs host mixers/events with the other grad programs as well, so while I can't speak from experience I'm pretty sure it's a solid dating scene. What I can speak to is that the weather ( so far) is really not that bad. I also come from a warm weather climate and was pretty scared :p Just get a good jacket and you'll be fine. It's obviously not ideal but the majority of the top 13 aren't exactly ideal weather wise anyways. If you have more questions along this line, feel free to pm.PostNihilist wrote:+1Teacher wrote:malysh wrote:Also a 1L. Happy to answer questions

It's been an extremely warm winter. At this time during my freshman year, it was consistently in the single digits.malysh wrote:Well our average age is up at 25 this year, so I imagine this means quite a few of us are in our mid 20s- 30s. To be fair, that was the polar vortex year. I remember some mornings walking home and it was 7 degrees outside. This year has been stupid warm.

Re: Michigan Law c/o 2021 Applicants
There are people here living their best life that are a variety of ages. Our avg age went up a year too, so the classes are getting "older." I think there's a social group for everyone. In my summer start class, we have some people who are straight-through, some who are married, some who are married with their first kid who's still a baby, some people who have BEEN married and have kids, some people who had a whole career before joining, some people with PhDs/pursuing PhDs (RIP to the curve thanks to them lol), and people all in between. There's no "ageism" in my super-section so everyone is invited to things and older folks still intermingle with us younger folks and have some wild nights with us.Teacher wrote:malysh wrote:Also a 1L. Also, there's a student org. called OWLS (older wiser law students) so if you're looking for an older crowd, there's a place to find them. I'm not super familiar with them/what events they do/how big their membership is because I'm only 23, but it exists.
Regarding hibernating in the winter: So far, it's actually not too bad. I'd consider it a mild winter. Low is like... mid-30s. Just get a nice coat. Personally, I've lived all over the place so I'm not really averse to the cold (though I prefer warmth and sunlight) but we have lots of people from California and none of them have turned into an ice cube yet! I think most people do less (activity-wise) once it gets cold out anyway, even those of us who are used to it.

Aww, man. I'm still at complete. I applied 10/16, completed 10/23, so I'm a little disappointed. Maybe that's normal for splitters?
Congratulations to the new admits!!

That's what I'm hoping/wondering too. Don't see a lot of splitter admits on LSN (though you are a much stronger candidate splitter than I).littlelibertine wrote:Aww, man. I'm still at complete. I applied 10/16, completed 10/23, so I'm a little disappointed. Maybe that's normal for splitters?

Congrats guys!! And to those waiting, I think Michigan's scatter plot on LSN shows they are really...well. Scattered. Lots of time, fear not.

Thanks! I don't remember if the date I got my status checker is the date I went complete, but if so then Nov. 9. I do remember that Michigan was one of the first schools I applied to and was the last to send me the status checker (took a little over 3 weeks).Mikey wrote:congrats! when did you go complete?38981928 wrote:Just got in!!! so excited!!!!
