Nah it happens. I was especially surprised because my school isn't known for attracting gunners.Lawl Shcool wrote:This thread is some sort of elaborate flame right? Nobody could actually do that.
TBF - I'm fine with kids taking notes, it's an active listening technique. Hell, I'd even be fine with them asking questions after the class. But during??? that's gotta be a joke.

This thread makes me feel better about skipping mock classes with a couple other guys who were also either ED or Deferred at my ASW. I wouldn't have been able to handle things like that.

are you implying that if other admitted students had skipped mock classes, they would have risked losing their admission?PatrickChewing15 wrote:This thread makes me feel better about skipping mock classes with a couple other guys who were also either ED or Deferred at my ASW. Re: PSA: do not gun during class visits
At my ASW:
1. Girl had to ask a question every ten minutes during the q and a with the dean, during the tour, during the student panel. Tried to answer EVERY DAMN QUESTION during our "mock class" and she took notes. If she is in my section in the fall I am going to go all full metal jacket on her ass (the movie, not a death threat). I could literally smell the gunpowder on her breath and see the end of her nose turn slightly brown.
2. Woman saw the average salary compared to the average debt, tried to argue that the average salary was higher with the financial aid dean. When she was told off she grabbed her daughter and left. (do people really let their parents decide where they are going to attend law school? )

Wow. I feel really bad for that daughter, even though she should be able to stick up for herself by now.boredatwork wrote:

During the financial aid session, this mother asked a question about everything the financial aid director just went over. It was like she needed everything explained to her personally so she could understand. Also, her son had already left.

That makes me laugh whenever I see it.
I took notes on the general atmosphere of the class: were current students volunteering to answer questions or was it straight cold call, was the prof somewhat entertaining/could I handle sitting in that class for a semester, how old the classrooms are/general feel of facilities, and maybe (don't crucify me TLS) even a couple interesting tidbits about the case that was being covered.
Since I went to 4 ASWs, I thought I needed to take some notes on classes to help with making a deposit decision later. It didn't even occur to me that I'd look like a tool. w/e I guess it doesn't really matter anyways. I definitely didn't see any need to speak to profs before or after class or voluntarily answer any questions.

Re: PSA: do not gun during class visits
While I didn't do that (only went to 2 and felt my mind was kind of made up but wanted to "check"), I saw a bunch of people who seemed to be taking notes on different elements such as the ones you mentioned... or writing down a couple of key points in other presentations given to us. I really saw nothing at all wrong with that. I think people are referencing individuals trying to furiously transcribe what the professor is saying so they can get a "leg up" for next year. Not the taking notes on the school to help make a decisionJDizzle2015 wrote:PolySuyGuy wrote:MrPapagiorgio wrote: Also, don't take notes during the mock class. I really didn't notice any gunning, a couple times the professor actually asked for a volunteer from ASW student and some kids rose their hands, but nothing insane. One time a parent answered a question which was kind of but I see much worse gunning in my UG than what I saw on my visits

But what if I'm taking notes so I don't blatantly fall asleep in a professor's class? I mean, that would be rude right?PolySuyGuy wrote:MrPapagiorgio wrote: Also, don't take notes during the mock class. You just look like a tool and believe me, people will remember you.

Re: PSA: do not gun during class visits
Thread Necro. Gotta say though, it's BS. It's all in style and how you do it.
I took notes when I toured the classes. I learned a good bit about what strict liability was, and the students were interested as well. I even got an introduction and a round of applause from the current students (the professor started that, not me!). It made me feel very welcome. I was respectful, introduced myself before and said thank you to the professor after. I never rose my hand to answer a question during class. I also hung out with some students and read out of their books.
Taking notes during a student day is not an asshole move. If someone is judging you for wanting to pay attention do listen to a new, scary subject, then they're definitely the asshole in the room, not you. Answering questions and pretending you know more about it than the students, OR taking up inordinate amounts of the professor's time? Yeah, that's an asshole move. But taking notes? Please.
The best advice really is to watch the culture, pay attention to it and fit into it. Don't let your 'passion in law' (i.e. your INSECURITY) get the better of you and make you do something hairbrained. Always watch others and do what they do.

Re: PSA: do not gun during class visits
Yea we had an admitted student answer a question once. That's a bad idea. But who cares if a 0L takes notes in a class or speaks to the professor after class. Seriously, you judge those kids based on that? I couldn't care less what they do, much less remember it when I see them the following year. Starting law school is an exciting time. I don't blame them for being a little over-excited.

Lol. Maybe so. It's exciting at first. Then you realize what it actually entails and that sentiment quickly subsides.MrPapagiorgio wrote:Then you're one hell of an optimist.DMBFan wrote:I'm clearly a 2L.MrPapagiorgio wrote:You're clearly not in law school yet.DMBFan wrote:Starting law school is an exciting time. The professor was old school, and seemed genuinely happy to see me. I think he was just being polite. If I had to give a reason, I probably got a round of applause because I got off my lazy ass and drove four hours to listen to him discuss Article 2 of the U.C.C.
I was flattered.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
