Re: Cornell c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
Just thought I'd toss out some interesting info I picked up from Spivey this morning:
Apparently Cornell has a new Dean of Admissions. So, for those of us out there trying to read the tea leaves based on the past 5 cycles to determine what Cornell does/does not prefer for applicants, it's probably a losing battle. It'll take some time to be able to predict if Cornell, say, likes splitters, or has a hard GPA floor, or is going to be more generous with scholarship money for high-performers. Other things like who they give fee waivers to and how long their application cycle runs will also probably be up in the air.
Sorry to introduce some uncertainty in here, but "knowing that you don't/can't know" is probably good situational awareness. Good luck all!

Thanks for the info. I'm a splitter so I figured it would be unpredictable regardless, and this confirms that even more. Let the waiting begin!ponderingmeerkat wrote:Just thought I'd toss out some interesting info I picked up from Spivey this morning:

Heard from the representative at an LSAC forum that they might not be giving full rides this cycle and give out more need-based aid.RamTitan wrote:This is so anecdotal that I probably should not even bother responding, but I know someone who scored a 173 with a 3.8 GPA who got a fullride from Cornell.nimbus cloud wrote:How generous is Cornell with scholarships? this will have zero influence on their decisioncall-me-bubbles wrote:Sorry to "bump" this, but since the thread just moved to the next page, I didn't want my question to get lost. Any thoughts on how likely it is that a dumb e-mail to admissions will affect the decision they make?call-me-bubbles wrote:So, Cornell is one of the few schools, it seems, who won't hold your file for an upcoming LSAT. I had inquired about this via e-mail and just got a response directing me to their FAQs, where my question is indirectly answered in a paragraph responding to a different question. This is the first boo-boo I've made on an application so far this cycle -- it was bound to happen some time -- but now I'm feeling really stupid and bummed about my chances at Cornell. How likely do you guys think this oversight is to be a factor in the adcom's decision?

Cornell 1L here. They didn't start sending invites until December 9 last year, so it might be a little bit yet. Good luck!SweetTort wrote:How long does it take to hear back about interviews?

so is there any advantage to submitting this early? seems like they want to get a sense of all their applicants before they send interview requests.Tycho wrote:Cornell 1L here. Re: Cornell c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
I gathered there still was some order, as in earlier applicants (i.e. before Thanksgiving) would get invites earlier on once they started sending them out. But, nonetheless, there's of course no disadvantage to submitting this early either. I applied 1st week of November and got an invite about a week after they started (so mid-Dec.).proteinshake wrote:so is there any advantage to submitting this early? seems like they want to get a sense of all their applicants before they send interview requests.Tycho wrote:Cornell 1L here. Re: Cornell c/o 2020 Applicants (2016-2017)
I tried to negotiate, but I had nothing to negotiate with--none of my other offers even came close. Still, the worst they can do is say "no", so I asked anyway. The interview was done through an app that had prerecorded questions and recorded my time-limited response. They don't tell you the questions beforehand, so you're still under pressure to think fast as you would be in a live interview. It was a very awkward format and at least one of my responses was cut off, but I think they realize that it's awkward and they don't judge you too harshly for it. I also heard a rumor that the interview app records constantly, so the interviewer can see you between questions, but I have no verification of this.nimbus cloud wrote:Thanks for this! Exactly what I wanted and needed to hear. Did you have to negotiate or was this the original offer?cantexplaingottago wrote: Worked for me. 1L, and my stats are slightly above the medians for my entering class. My scholarship covers about 70% of tuition. It's still a ton of debt, but I am very happy with my decision and their offer. I stated explicitly that Cornell was my top choice in the "Why Cornell" section, and I had several years of unrelated work experience on my resume. Hope this helps!
Also, I've seen people discuss Cornell interviews. Do they interview everyone?
If any of you end up gaining admission and choosing Cornell, I'm happy to talk to you about living frugally in Ithaca, and what to expect from the school. Just be patient for responses and recognize that my point of view is limited. I'm a 1L in my first semester, so I'm insanely busy and I haven't even experienced finals yet.

Submitted 9/23 but no interview request.
RIP
I also believe you need to be interviewed for Cornell to be admitted. However, no idea what the % of people interviewed are admitted.

My e-mail states that the online interview is voluntary so I am not sure that interviewing is necessary for admission. Does it say the same for anyone else?
