Berkeley CR Review 1

Post by Redsgomarchingon » Sat Jan 29, 2011 11:55 pm

I thought I'd start this thread so that people who got sent to faculty review (Jan. 28-Feb 18th) for Berkeley can see how each other are doing. I'll start:

...nothing here

EDIT: just realized the title of this thread is redundant. How do I change it?

Sounds like a cool idea. I'm UCR, so I fit the bill.

looking at LSN, looks like a lot of rejections came on 2/5 last year. Not necessarily CR people though. Looks like most actually heard back on 2/18. But things change

This will probably be the last time I use the word "in" with a thread relating to Boalt, so I better enjoy it. LOL

LOL, ok, maybe that one. :)

Actually, I have this feeling I am going to rot on their WL b/c of my really high GPA (probably one of the highest they get all cycle, but who knows).

Checking in.

I must say that having a target response date is very civilized. Many of my applications have languished since early September. It's nice of Berkeley to say, "Look, we don't know about you yet. But we will. Roughly the week of Valentine's Day. Maybe cook dinner at home that night. Comfort food. Box of tissues. Just sayin'."

In CR too. I really should have been an auto-reject with my numbers (both roughly 25th percentile), non-URM, so significant softs must mean something to Berkeley. Still, I'm fully expecting to be one of the first casualties this round.

I don't know when they start sending notifications for second round, but if you survive past Feb 5th (which was a huge rejection day last year), I think you have a good shot for it

Got the email for CR. Do the people with the best numbers get in or is this the most holistic part of the application process? How are a URM's chances at this point?

I'm curious about this too...from the acceptance numbers, it sounds like it is similar to the overall acceptance rate...

I've heard this is where a little bit of luck comes into play. It depends on which faculty member is assigned your file. Some look to numbers, some don't. Some search for URMs, some don't. Files are evidently assigned by random process, so there's no telling what your assigned faculty member will prioritize in their review.

Sweet thread. The best part about going to CR is that now I have a reason to compulsively status check; the last few months were just sad and tragic. Well, that's enough TLS time, back to the status checker. 15 minutes is more than enough time for them to have updated me, right?

I'm sure this has been asked before, but I haven't seen an answer so. I've also gotten the email and made it to faculty committee review, is it worth sending a LOCI if I initially only did a general personal statement or should I let my application be?

I don't think this will factor in one way or another. Many people got in off of CR without sending one (myself included). If it doesn't really add to your file, it is doubtful it will make a difference in committee.

I'll actually be in the Bay area the week of the 18th. Hopefully they'll accept me a day or two before the 18th so I can swing by and say hi.

Also checking in; this is also my first choice (though Stanford on a long shot couldn't hurt). Here's hoping...
