For retakers: Question about PT's already completed.

Post by nyjets2090 » Wed Apr 24, 2013 9:50 pm

Hi everybody,

I'm hoping someone can answer this for me. I'll be retaking the LSAT in June. Because I have already taken some PTs (the 7 most recent one's, excluding Dec '12 and Oct '12 which was my actual LSAT), I'm curious about how to approach retaking them.

When should I retake them? Since I'm familiar with them, I don't want those to be the ones I'm taking 2 or 3 weeks before the test and have a false sense of confidence. I've gotten 167s on my past two PTs, but they're the least confident 167s I think anybody has ever gotten on a PT.

How should I evaluate a PT in relation to ones I haven't taken? Obviously if I score high I'd have to attribute some of it to have taken it before.

Am I putting too much thought into it? Should I just take them and evaluate them as if I've never seen them before?

Should I take those PTs now and then go to the older ones (finish out the 40s, go through the 60s, and then the 50s?) I'm hoping that another retaker has some advice, I'd appreciate it!

Useful for learning, not as useful as diagnostics.

Strongly consider taking in October if you have only taken 7 PTs.

Thanks for the link.

To clarify, I took 7 PTs before the first one, counting those and what I've done so far, I'm at 15, with 22 more scheduled between now and test day. I'm familiar with the questions, I just need to get enough practice.

October is not an option, this is the best time fore me to prep as I do not have any other commitments between now and June. 6 more weeks to devote fully to the test.

They are great for honing technique and efficient diagramming on lg's... Otherwise perhaps not as useful if they are fresh in your mind and you remember them well.

I usually add an "experimental" section to my PTs. What would be the consensus on using the ones which I've already taken for that purpose?

It's of very little value. If you've got the endurance to write 4 sections in a row, you'll have the endurance to write 5 sections in a row. Furthermore, quit doing 4 sections in a row. Work on getting better at answering questions correctly and quickly rather than showing yourself over and over than you can maintain your concentration over 4 or 5 sections. Not only does doing 4 or 5 sections at a time not help you improve your score (you learn from figuring out ways to approach questions better, and this is best done when the questions are fresh in your mind), but it makes practicing for the LSAT really f---ing boring.

Whenever you've got a few minutes to spare, do 5-6 questions at a time and then find out why you got any wrong or why you were less than 100% confident about a right answer. It's a much more efficient use of your time and much less boring. You don't have to make yourself feel bored to be studying well.

Good luck.
