This seems.... wrong. Come to the east coast, Atlantic city is dying, there are probably good deals there.amta wrote:reno is an extremely desirable destination.thatlawlkid wrote: more expensive somehow. How is it that i got cheaper flights to mexico than i can domestic?

Depends on the school, but if they have their own health center sometimes it's $0 copays there and there are tons of specialists, which is really hard to beat. I def am going with school insurance for that reason.proteinshake wrote:trying to help a friend: is it better to get insurance through your school? or is it possible to get it cheaper privately?

There's no way my schools insurance is the cheapest I could possibly get,but there are a lot of reasons I am going to get it anywayproteinshake wrote:trying to help a friend: is it better to get insurance through your school? or is it possible to get it cheaper privately?

If we are strictly talking private health insurance I think it's cheaper to do your schools plan when you add in the $0 clinic option katemckitten talks about above.proteinshake wrote:trying to help a friend: is it better to get insurance through your school? or is it possible to get it cheaper privately?
It *might* be cheaper if you can qualify for a public insurance option if your state allows (Massachusetts does but I can't speak to other states because we have progressive health care laws compared to a lot of other places) but you lose enough convenience (clinic use, payment comes from loans so you don't have to worry about it, etc) that I think it's a wash in many cases unless you're really strapped for cash.
If you're under 26, see chargers comment. Another option: get married just for the health insurance. Probably nothing will go wrong

Yeah, Medicaid is definitely the cheapest option if you live in a state that expanded eligibility. Otherwise, the school plan is probably cheaper both in premiums and cost-sharing than an equivalent plan on the individual marketplace -- college risk pools tend to be young and healthy, so the plans can offer better benefits for less money.ashrice13 wrote:If we are strictly talking private health insurance I think it's cheaper to do your schools plan when you add in the $0 clinic option katemckitten talks about above.proteinshake wrote:trying to help a friend: is it better to get insurance through your school? or is it possible to get it cheaper privately?

Edit: The medicaid option only applies if you qualify due to income, of course. If you have passive income (investment dividends or whatever) which renders you ineligible for Medicaid, you may be eligible for Advance Premium Tax Credits on the individual insurance marketplace which would mitigate the premiums on a plan. In that case, an individual plan might be cheaper than your school plan.

I'm going with the school plan precisely for the same reasons. In the working world I've been on the cheap "pray you don't get hurt but always have enough in savings to cover the deductible plan" but I don't like that for when I'm not going to be actively making money.KateMcKitten wrote:Depends on the school, but if they have their own health center sometimes it's $0 copays there and there are tons of specialists, which is really hard to beat.
