Shoreland is fantastic, living here now after living in grad housing last year. I loved grad housing for the price, but this is a much nicer apartment with a fantastic view, so it's worth it to me. Happy to answer any questions about it (or anything else, of course). I will say that Shoreland's gym is shit. Two ellipticals, three treadmills, and similarly basic strength training equipment.

There's actually a bunch of 1L's living here this year, in addition to three of us 2L's. To my knowledge, only one 1L lived there last year.

how do you get to campus and back?

Haha, that's the exact impression I had when looking at their website. Building looks amazing, but the gym looks like a piece of crap.

What's the actual deal with the internet? Is it 1G as advertised? Do you mind running a speedtest?

Do you pay for a single, or do you have a roommate?

Actually rather strange, normally it's around 80-90 mb. But typically it's perfect for me, I can download a 2GB file in a few minutes.

And yes, I have a roommate. He has the master, and I have a parking space, so we split the rent right down the middle, with the exception of the pet fee which I pay. It comes out to around $1300-$1400 each a month (you can get stuff for half this price in Hyde Park, and cheaper here without a parking spot, but for me the view is worth it). We have an end apartment (all of which are 2 bedrooms, I think), here are a few pics of our view I took the other day (and bonus pics of my cats):

The end point you see out there is promontory point, which is absolutely beautiful to go for a walk on. I especially love walking by the church when it's snowing--just so beautiful. When it's warm out, there are boulders on the water that are nice to rest and do your reading on.

For the past three weeks I've actually been driving even though it's pretty close, but I had a really early class so I figured I would since it's easy to find parking at that time. (But that class is over now, so I probably won't be driving anymore.)

Normally I take the bus down and walk back, but the 171 stops right in front of the building, and drops off at the law school. It's about a 10-15 minute bus ride, depending on traffic. There are always lots of empty seats by the time it gets to Shoreland. You can also take it back, but I never have, the bus makes me dizzy and by the end of the day I want some time alone to think. Here is a map of the 171 - the orange dot is Shoreland, the blue dot is the law school.



It is not furnished, and indoor parking is $250/month. I am not sure about outdoor parking. (By contrast, last year at university housing it was $70/month for outdoor parking.)

Yes and no. I wouldn't say I missed out because I didn't mind, but if you're a social butterfly Regents is probably better. But they're not that far apart-about a 10-15 minute walk. As for Shoreland, now that I'm a 2L, most people live up in the city anyway, so being in Regents wouldn't help.

Robb, do you know what the availability of the 1G internet is? If not no worries, I'm sure we'll get advertisements.

So, I just asked him, and according to my roommate we have 25mbps internet (he deals with the internet stuff). He says that they often have deals for different speeds, though, but that normally the 1gb internet is $200/month. A friend of ours in the building has the 1gb internet and apparently got it on one of those deals.

The 171 has stops right in front of Shoreland and right in front of the law school, yeah. It runs every ~10-15 minutes, so it's never a long wait. On cold days you can stay inside until it gets close. (Pro-tip: text "ctabus 15919" to 41411 for arrival times for Shoreland, and "ctabus 17057" for the law school.)

As for the internet, they ran a special last year where if you signed a lease by x date then you got the 1G internet included for free, or some kind of promotion like that. Unfortunately Robb and I were just a little outside of that window, so we got the basic 8Mbps for free. I upgraded to the 25Mbps for $25/month. The base plans, afaik, are:

Up to 8 Mbps Download/8 Mbps Upload is FREE
Up to 25 Mbps Download/25 Mbps Upload is $25 Per Month
Up to 50 Mbps Download /50 Mbps Upload is $50 Per Month
Up to 100 Mbps Download /100 Mbps Upload is $100 Per Month
Up to 1,000 Mbps Download/1000 Mbps Upload is $200 Per Month

The speeds, at least the 8 and 25Mbps, tend to run well above their rating, fwiw.

Yeah, I'm sort of torn between going for just a regular grad apartment and saving a couple hundred bucks a month, or Regent's/Shoreland/etc. just to make sure that I have to be a bit more social and meet people.

1L here. I'm in Regents and it has worked out well so far. The 172 stops right outside, making it very convenient to get to class. It's not too expensive (especially if you can find a roommate) and the social benefits are a huge plus. It's definitely nice to be able to hang out with friends without even leaving the building.

At most, I'd suggest skimming Getting to Maybe. It really isn't even that helpful because first quarter's exams aren't traditional doctrinal issue spotters.

Otherwise, no. Have fun, travel, earn money, and wait until the fall to start reading!

I know this is a long shot, but...Any current or past students have some insight into Hyde Park elementary schools, day care, and family-friendly campus housing? I have some serious planning to do for my move and I'm on the west coast, so I won't be able to see the area until ASW.
