Re: The University of Chicago Law School Class of 2018
Hey amigos,
Thanks for the invite to join the FB group, but I'm actually not on social media (sorry to be that guy!). If someone doesn't mind sharing their phone number with me (just shoot me a PM), I'd love to come to some gatherings and even host a party at mi casa.
Thanks!

It's like feeling bad about your first cold call performance. Literally no one will remember it.

Held, woo-hoo!

Best places for free wifi in the area (in addition to Starbucks)? Won't get wifi in my apartment until the 9th

Cafe 53 is okterrier27 wrote:Best places for free wifi in the area (in addition to Starbucks)? Won't get wifi in my apartment until the 9th
The sip on 53rd/hyde park has dece coffee
The bridgeport coffee in HPAC is aight, if you're around regents
If those reviews sound tepid, this is hyde park so the standard of review ranges from "bad" to "decent/ok"
There's a lot more cool stuff uptown, if you're just hanging out until classes start, I recommend using that time to get out and explore. Won't have as much time to do that stuff once school starts

You could also probably do wifi anywhere on campus if you have a UChicago account already

This wifi is pretty great and pretty expansive all over campus. If the Starbucks near campus has Google wifi (some do, I'm not sure if this one does yet), id go there.DontStopBeliebin wrote:You could also probably do wifi anywhere on campus if you have a UChicago account already
Warheit - are you gonna throw one this Saturday so I can finally attend one of these things? Going to Wisconsin was/is fun for the holiday weekend but I feel bad missing out on meeting everyone who's come to town.

I would definitely be interested in this as well! I just moved in this past week and am in Michigan for the holiday weekend, but it would be nice to meet some people before orientation. Thanks for always organizing/publicizing this stuff - it's super helpful!Wahrheit wrote:Holy shit, you missed out. Buss was probably my second- or third-least-favorite 1L prof, FWIW. Super difficult to follow - changes topic mid-sentence, speaks super duper fast, and generally explains things like someone who never had trouble understanding any of the concepts she teaches (and thus has no idea that other people might need the steps between A and Z). Very nice human being, though.
Strauss is obviously a gem. I've yet to hear anyone who disliked him, his class, or his teaching style.

The other Civ Pro I instructor this year is Casey, whom I've heard a few people say this same thing about too (the analogy was a Calculus professor being forced to teach arithmetic). I've got Buss as well; here's hoping things go smoothly.beepboopbeep wrote:Buss was probably my second- or third-least-favorite 1L prof, FWIW. I had Buss last year for Civ Pro I and Casey for Civ Pro II.zhenders wrote:The other Civ Pro I instructor this year is Casey, whom I've heard a few people say this same thing about too (the analogy was a Calculus professor being forced to teach arithmetic). Buss was personally one of my favorite teachers. I thought she was very clear, very accessible, and incredibly smart. With that said, many of my peers disagreed with me. The major complaints are that she talks too fast and as a result can be hard to follow. This makes her cold calls intimidating because often by the time you realize you have been called on you have no idea what the question is. I think everyone agrees though that she is one of the nicest human beings at the law school. Also, she assigns a lot of reading.
Casey was not one of my favorites, but his classes are definitely entertaining. He is not like a classic law professor in that he doesn't hide the ball. In fact, he kind of does the opposite where he starts each class by telling you what the point of all the cases you're reading are. For a lot of students this was great, for me this actually was more confusing than anything. In class, he is pretty funny though and will keep you entertained. He will explain concepts over and over again until he thinks the class gets it, as opposed to professors who touch on things once and move on. If you're the type of student who goes to office hours/meets with professors, he is always accessible. Was pretty pretty reasonable about reading assignments too.

I would be wary of listening to someone who enjoyed professors less the more clear they were. Or maybe that's just a testament to law students being the worst.
