Workout clothes for class
I start class in a few weeks and I'm wondering whether or not it would be okay to wear workout clothes to class. My city is hot so I'm always in workout clothes-- it's just comfortable.
I'm not talking cut sleeves, but usually, I'm in Nike shorts and a plain Nike tee shirt.
Although it's a silly question, I appreciate any feedback. Thanks

I judge the fuck out of people who are dressed like we're still in middle school and not law school, but I think I'm in the minority.eddiemen2a wrote:I start class in a few weeks and I'm wondering whether or not it would be okay to wear workout clothes to class. But dress nicely for a while and then follow what everyone else does slash whatever you are comfortable with.

Re: Workout clothes for class
I did this throughout UG and it was never a big deal. I think the environment matters a lot. People will definitely judge you, but if you know your stuff it will matter less. That being said, the advice above sounds appropriate since law professors may care more about a "professional" appearance.

Everyone else judges the fuck out of you. OP, wear whatever's comfortable.malleus discentium wrote:I judge the fuck out of people who are dressed like we're still in middle school and not law school, but I think I'm in the minority.eddiemen2a wrote:I start class in a few weeks and I'm wondering whether or not it would be okay to wear workout clothes to class. You are absolutely in the minority, and probably an insufferable snot.malleus discentium wrote:I judge the fuck out of people who are dressed like we're still in middle school and not law school, but I think I'm in the minority.eddiemen2a wrote:I start class in a few weeks and I'm wondering whether or not it would be okay to wear workout clothes to class. OP, wear whatever you want. It'd be nice for everyone if you covered your armpit hair, but really that's it.

Just work out in your suit. Easy fix.

I'd judge someone who was dressed too formally in class (unless it was for like an interview or something) before I would judge someone who was wearing sweatpants
I'm confident that I'm in the majority on that one

Re: Workout clothes for class
Most people in my section dressed very well last year and suits (for interviews) were much more common than comfortable workout clothes. I actually can't remember a single time that someone showed up to class wearing sweatpants although it probably happened for a couple of 9am Friday classes. Maybe it's a NY thing though.

You want to look slightly disheveled so people mistake you for the weak link and not as serious competition.

This. Wear whatever you want. Some days I spend more effort depending on my mood. If it's a Friday morning and I'm hungover I consider it exceeding expectations that I made it to class in whatever I'm wearing. If you wore basketball shorts every single day for all year I could see you becoming known for that but it's not like that automatically makes you someone who isn't chill.BigZuck wrote:I'd judge someone who was dressed too formally in class (unless it was for like an interview or something) before I would judge someone who was wearing sweatpants

Wear whatever is most comfortable for you. If Speedos let you pay better attention, wear those. Class isn't a job interview. No one cares. Your peers aren't going to be the ones giving you a job.

Surprised some people didn't have females wearing lululemon/yoga pants to class!

Also confident you're in the majority on that one. OP, where whatever you want and is comfortable. Anyone who judges you for not dressing as if you're going to work instead of going to school (and you are, after all, going to school) is a turd. There are lots of people who like to do the whole "it's fun to dress up and pretend to be real men and women!" thing, and whatever, that's fine. But don't let it dissuade you from taking advantage of one of the last chances in a while to dress comfortably M-F.BigZuck wrote:I'd judge someone who was dressed too formally in class (unless it was for like an interview or something) before I would judge someone who was wearing sweatpants

It's pretty common in my experience.legit wrote:Surprised some people didn't have females wearing lululemon/yoga pants to class!
The people who like to play dress up are usually K-JDs who haven't yet realized that wearing a suit everyday sucks.elterrible78 wrote:There are lots of people who like to do the whole "it's fun to dress up and pretend to be real men and women!" thing, and whatever, that's fine. This thread is weird. Sure, you are technically allowed to wear whatever you want. That said, wearing gym clothes in public makes you look like a slob, whether it is to class, the mall, a restaurant, or anywhere else.

Re: Workout clothes for class
Frankly, I genuinely don't care what one wears to class. There is a happy medium here, however, if you are concerned with perception. One that advocates a suit to class is an insufferable ape. Long pants for males seems reasonable, but, then again, I'm in Texas and I am sure to be wearing shorts on some days.

I spent roughly 90% of 1L in basketball shorts and t-shirts, and I'm at a school where the majority of people have WE before law school. You'll be fine. Nobody cares.

Good thing the options are not limited to "gym clothes" or "unnecessarily uncomfortable clothing" then.rinkrat19 wrote:Dressing in unnecessarily uncomfortable clothing makes you look uptight.RancidSumo wrote:This thread is weird. Re: Workout clothes for class
I'm not sure where you buy your clothes but if everything you own except gym clothes is uncomfortable, consider changing stores/sizes. My dress clothes are no less comfortable than my sweatpants and t-shirts. Jeans and a polo or button down is the same story. Perfectly comfortable and doesn't make me look like I'm in need of a shower. I'm not saying wear a suit every day but going at least a step or two above workout attire is necessary in my book.rinkrat19 wrote:Dressing in unnecessarily uncomfortable clothing makes you look uptight.RancidSumo wrote:This thread is weird. I dressed in basketball shorts and t-shirts every day in class unless I had to wear a suit. Nobody cares.(well, might have some classmates that care but that's none of their business and they're not really the people you should care about anyways) Professors certainly don't care. And it didn't hinder my performance at all. I was comfortable. Many of my classmates wore the same sort of clothes.

Re: Workout clothes for class
I hate jeans. I find them to be very uncomfortable. Jeans and a polo shirt/a button down during the hot months are awful. I'll sweat through my shirt unless I wear an undershirt which just makes things more uncomfortable. I'll stick with the gym clothes.RancidSumo wrote:I'm not sure where you buy your clothes but if everything you own except gym clothes is uncomfortable, consider changing stores/sizes. Necessary? Who are they necessary for? Who are you trying to impress with your clothes in class?
