GULC 3L Taking Questions

Post by taylorswiftftw » Wed Aug 07, 2013 5:48 pm

Long time lurker on TLS here. I benefited immensely from TLS advice pre-law school and want to pass on the help.

Specific to GULC, is there anything you wish you had done differently with regards to studying in 1L? Any particular class that you would say requires more time than others?

Thanks in advance for your response!

I was happy with the route I took 1L year, mostly because I followed TLS advice. Don't worry about how you look in class, focus 100% on the exam, don't waste too much time briefing, etc.

Con Law was probably my most time-consuming class. However, I think that was mostly a function of me having it first semester. I found it a little more amorphous than classes like torts/contracts, but I don't know if that is the majority opinion.

Do you have a job lined up? If so, what type?

Best guess on the percentage of students who self-select into PI/government?

I have no idea whatsoever and any response I could give would be pretty useless.

Thanks for doing this. GULC gets a lot of shit on this blog in large part due to their huge class size. Did you find the class size at all hindered your GULC experience when it came to finding a bog law job? How is the social scene at GULC? Thanks again!

I picked up my SA job through OCI with no problem. Keep in mind, however, that if the class size at GULC had an effect on the job search, it would make sense that the effect would only be visible in the aggregate and not on the individual level. Anecdotal evidence on big law hiring is nearly useless, so take any of it with a grain of salt.

The social scene at GULC is pretty great. You are funneled into smaller sections for first year classes, so the total class size is not overwhelming. There are plenty of organizations to get involved with and there is a pretty lively bar scene.

EIW for the class of 2013 appears to have gone (judging by the TLS EIW 2012 thread, Dean Treanor's announcement of SA rates, and XOXO/Reddit hearsay) about as well as other low T-14s, and much better than the class of 2011 & 2012. Is this impression accurate? Is the sense on campus that GULC has finally had a resurgence w/r/t Biglaw placement? Thanks for doing this

I'm not the OP, but I can shed some light on this. I don't think it's particularly difficult to get on *a* journal, just maybe not the one you want.

Stats: According to information provided during this year's Write-On, there are 848 staff positions across all journals. In 2012, the incoming class was 519 students. With some very roughly estimated math, that's 848 journal positions for 1038 2Ls and 3Ls (82%). Seems like pretty solid odds I guess.

How many spots are available for the crim defense clinic? How competitive is it to get on and is it based on gpa or desire to be a PD?

Do you think any of the clinics or other ECs are legitimately helpful? Do you feel like some employers preferred clinic (or specific clinic) work and that participants of a particular clinic had better OCI results?

Not OP, but another student at GULC. Since you can't do clinics until 2L year at the earliest, it doesn't really factor into OCI for most students.
