Is emailing a firm and asking for an interview effective? Or are we better off trying to grab one from a hospitality suite? Or should we do both?

All of the above. It's easier to go into a hospitality suite and be able to reference a prior email exchange. But your excuse for not getting a screener better not be that you bid the firm in 12th place.

I had TWO disappear after I clicked in. If it looks like, after you clicked in, it wont let you take it, GIVE UP and move quickly. I missed on Gibson and ended up with Paul Hastings because I took too long trying to get Gibson, then tried Skadden. It was dumb.

Is the process really obvious once you log in? The instructions in the email aren't exactly the most informative things ever.

Can anyone provide advice on how to deal with DC firms in interviews if you are really interested in working there and fall within their callback range, but lack significant/any ties to the area?

Is it not enough to say you love 'murica?

You should look into the differences- there are usually pretty substantial differences in the practice areas and work at those offices. I know, for instance, that almost all of Cleary's Antitrust division is in DC (and Brussels, but I digress).

Can someone at median w/ a Cornell JD reasonably expect to get biglaw in TX(w/ ties) or other non-NYC markets w/o ties?
Is there any advantage to having IP credentials (EE,patent bar) for OCI?
