Do law firms ask for your judge's info to do reference checks?

Sometimes they do. Usually, you should offer them as a reference even if not specifically asked. It looks a little strange not to have your judge serve as a reference.

Thanks! Do firms actually make the calls, though? Things aren't going well, and I am concerned that my judge's reference could tank any offer for me.

I hate you're going through that. I don't have an answer besides try to finish strong. Though, it might be a benefit to sit down with your judge and talk about it.

I’m sorry about that. I think it depends on the firm. The firm my co-clerk got an offer from called their references, including the judge. But I don’t think a firm I got an offer from called.

I've been having an objectively terrible cycle.
For What It's Worth, I spoke with a career adviser from my former law school and he told me that it's been a fairly dry hiring season for a lot of people
Hope that brings comfort to anyone else striking out like myself.

It really depends. You don’t need to put your judge I don’t think. When I landed at my firm, which normally places a significant emphasis on references, I put my judge but they did not call. They only contacted a professor I’d put there (turns out it was relatively self interested as the partner who called the prof was old friends with the prof and I think wanted to use it as an excuse to reconnect). If you are worried about your judge being unsupportive, id leave them off initially and see if you get any push back, although I doubt you would if you have other solid references to offer. Plenty of people have less than stellar clerkship experiences, the firms know that.

Does anyone have a sense of what clerk hiring has been like this cycle at the larger DC lit shops? (Gibson, Wilmer, Covington, W&C, Jones Day, Jenner, etc.) It seems like there isn't too much but I wanted to get the sense of others.

I extended my clerkship last year and dealt with DLA Piper then. They didn't give me any status update until April and then in I believe September said try back again in 2024 as they are all set for Fall 2023.

Darn. I thought I was competitive for a position. Turns out, I wasn't even competitive for a response.

Anybody know how North Carolina firms are hiring this year? Both biglaw and boutique? I'm from NC so I have easy ties, but I've been told by a couple of big firms that clerk hiring has already concluded.

Heading to a strong regional firm in North Carolina after wrapping up a clerkship and was told by the hiring partner that they are not hiring any additional entry-level associates (who did not summer with them) to start this Fall. A friend of mine who is wrapping up a federal appellate clerkship was just hired at one of the more traditional big law firms in Charlotte. But he made it sound like he was fortunate to get it and that many firms told him they just didn't have the space to bring on new associates coming off clerkships this year. As you likely know, North Carolina is a tough market to crack if you want to litigate. Charlotte is the biggest market by far and is heavily skewed toward transactional work. If you didn't summer for one of the firms prior to clerking, probably going to be hard to land even with ties this late in the game.

Has anyone applied to firms in Chicago? I haven't heard anything from my applications to the major firms (Kirkland, Latham, Sidley, Jenner).
