Even though she’s on plan? Maybe her strong preference for work experience/prior clerkships means the plan doesn’t matter much for her in practice though.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 12:17 pmKelly has started interviewing for 2021, I think she does them all in one go.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 11:45 amAlso curious for any information re: reputation/hiring practices of Loken, Kelly, and Stras.

Yeah I think that's it - prior clerkship seems to be a de facto requirement, so I doubt any 2Ls are making the cut anyway.

Re: Let's Talk 8th Circuit!
From Linkedin it looks like Judge Kelly takes a mix of clerks from regional and national schools. Harvard, Stanford, UCLA, Iowa, Drake. She doesn't look particularly grade-selective (at least at T14s) and looks only moderately tie-sensitive. Lots of former clerks with PI-ish resumes. That's obviously rough speculation and the input of anyone who actually knows something would be great.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 4:47 pmAnonymous User wrote: ↑Tue May 19, 2020 3:24 pmEven though she’s on plan? If anybody has news about 8th Cir. clerkship hiring they should post it here! I'm sick of reading about D.C., N.Y., and CA in the other thread. Go Team Flyover.

Stras is full for 2022, as he posted on OSCAR. Kelly filled before the plan started for 2021. I’ve heard nothing else but someone asked about Benton on here so I assume he’s offered an interview.

Are we to take this as inside knowledge that he hasn’t moved yet, or are you just speaking generally? And I’ve also heard really good things.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 6:40 pmGreat Judge. Full for 2020, hiring 2 more for 2021, open for 2022.

Any details on the good things? Was a little skeptical because of the ABA rating he was given.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Jun 18, 2020 8:46 pmAre we to take this as inside knowledge that he hasn’t moved yet, or are you just speaking generally? If you actually care about ABA ratings, you might not be the best fit for a judge like Kobes (or the entirety of the 8th Circuit for the most part). From my interactions with Kobes, he's incredibly kind and polite, couldn't speak to the clerkship though.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 12:09 pmAny details on the good things? Competent judge, good guy, not too ideological, etc. He's not gonna be a feeder but pretty good for South Dakota. And if you actually read his ABA report that's what it says (that nobody had a bad word to say about his character and that he's a very accomplished and intelligent person). He basically got shafted by the ABA for spending a lot of his career doing transactional/advisory/legislative work rather than litigation and it was maybe the second most egregiously silly NQ they gave out (after the one for the person who was a few months short of their legal experience requirement who got confirmed 100-0). And I'm liberal and I'm saying it was dumb.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 12:09 pmAny details on the good things? All of the above. Also, at 45, he's going to be on the 8th for a long, long time.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Fri Jun 19, 2020 1:43 pmCompetent judge, good guy, not too ideological, etc. He's not gonna be a feeder but pretty good for South Dakota. Any opinions on the district judges in Iowa? Have heard Reade is notably conservative and Pratt is notably liberal but nothing on the others Even without direct knowledge any opinions by CA8 clerks reviewing orders even would be helpful.

I'm going to ask this here since it will get buried in the "Best/Worst" thread...any opinions on Lange (D.S.D.)?

Re: Let's Talk 8th Circuit!
Just so you know what you're getting into, he's in Pierre, not Sioux Falls, which is the "big city" in South Dakota. And unlike Sioux Falls, Pierre isn't close to other decent-sized cities like Sioux City, IA. It might be the country's most desolate state capital. He looks well-qualified though.Anonymous User wrote: ↑Thu Jun 25, 2020 11:08 amI'm going to ask this here since it will get buried in the "Best/Worst" thread...any opinions on Lange (D.S.D.)?

Bump. And does anyone know if Ebinger has a one-year spot left? She should based on her past hiring practices but hasn't posted one.

Colloton's among the slowest off-plan judges, he didn't fill for 2021 until this spring, but he hires on a rolling basis.
Also, if you're seriously interested in Colloton, you should ask around about what it's like working for him. Some people have quite bad experiences.
