Re: Cornell Class of 2016
I saw the kitchen and bathroom. Kitchen had 3-4 fridges, couple sinks, couple oven/stoves
Overall pretty straightforward.
Pros: good sized rooms, furnished, damn close to Myron Taylor, seems reasonably priced, common space for parties, social aspect
Cons: shared common spaces, kinda ugly, maybe too close to campus?
If I attend I'll probably live there, simply for the convenience.

would you really want to live in Hughes? I mean you'll probably spend enough time as is in Myron Taylor Hall Library, wouldn't you want to get away / out of the building? haha

Re: Cornell Class of 2016
Hughes was ok. No windows or natural light made it too much of a cave for me though. I definitely needed something away from campus, and didn't feel like sharing my bathroom with 50 people.
Edit: I know, I know... The bathrooms have a better ratio than the kitchen.

Re: Cornell Class of 2016
It's not like anything would be stopping me from leaving the building if I lived in Hughes. I could always just take a walk if I really wanted to get out; and if I don't want to go out (due to bad weather for example) I don't have to. As it is, assuming that neither the workload of 1L nor the crowdedness of the gyms dissuades me from my normal routine, I should be leaving the building 4 times a week to go to the gym. Hughes' proximity to campus would also make these trips much easier.BronxBlu21 wrote:would you really want to live in Hughes? If you really don't want to have to interact with your classmates every time you go to either the kitchen or the bathroom then that could be a reason to not live in Hughes, but I don't think having an excuse to leave the physical building is a substantial factor for me.
^ Also, I like caves

She did say that was the largest size room. I think I would really enjoy the convenience of it and the community aspect, but I think I'd prefer to find a cheaper option.Lavitz wrote:Have any special thoughts?helix23 wrote:I peeked itsmdpnp wrote:Did anyone take a look at Hughes Hall?
I was only there for 5 minutes and got to see the one room. It looked comfortable, but I have a feeling that may have been one of the extra large rooms.

Re: Cornell Class of 2016
true, all very good points Lavitz. I don't know, for me personally, I would like to be able to get away if you know what I mean. I feel like being in the building all the time at the library is enough, wouldn't want to live there too (haha). On another note, is anyone who is interested in apartments / living off campus looking for roommates? As an undergrad at Cornell right now, I have a pretty solid idea of what is out there, and am looking to potentially have an apartment with either 1 or 2 male roommates. Any interests?
iMisto, I noticed you said you signed a lease already, mind if I inquire as to where?
Also Lavitz, the closest gym from Myron Taylor Hall or Hughes is Noyes (near West Campus) about a 5 - 15 minute walk. Or you could venture either to Newman (North) or Teagle (on undergrad campus). In general, the gyms tend to get crowded since they are relatively small, but during certain hours and times of the day, they are pretty empty. Be warned though, the gyms are all extremely packed anywhere from 3 PM to 6 PM on any given day.

I'd be interested in roommates, if I do indeed choose Cornell. Can you share more info on the gyms? Kind of equipment they all have, size, that kind of thing. I wasn't able to find too much information on Cornell's website.

I'm sort-of-interested since it would be nice having someone familiar with Cornell as a roommate. And maybe we can get a lifting apartment going with guinness and learntoliftBronxBlu21 wrote:On another note, is anyone who is interested in apartments / living off campus looking for roommates? This is pretty much what I had heard, although I'm relieved to hear there are times when they're not packed. I'm used to going at odd hours, so that's fine with me.BronxBlu21 wrote:Also Lavitz, the closest gym from Myron Taylor Hall or Hughes is Noyes (near West Campus) about a 5 - 15 minute walk. +1 to this.guinness1547 wrote:Can you share more info on the gyms? Kind of equipment they all have, size, that kind of thing. I wasn't able to find too much information on Cornell's website.
I completely forgot that I was supposed to check out the gym while I was there.
This is what I've found so far from digging through the taking questions thread:
PinkCow wrote:Gyms suck. The closest to the LS is Noyes. If you go on an off hour (read: super early or super late) it's not too bad. Any other time there's basically a line for everything and it's wall to wall people. Seriously. The gym itself is built really poorly with pillars all over the place, and so you're in everybody's way all of the time. Also, if you're into machines, there are basically none there (free weights and treadmills/bikes).
If you're willing to walk an extra 10 minutes, Teagle is the best (more free weights/platforms + a separate machine/treadmill room upstairs), but it's only slightly bigger and suffers from the same overcrowding problem as the other gyms.
For the money, it's not bad, but the space is very, very disappointing for a school this size. It's really a hassle.
EDIT: There are a couple other main gyms on campus: Helen Newman and Appel or something. Neither are really within walking distance to the LS. I've been to HN and it's OK. Maybe a tiny bigger than Noyes. It's also smack in the middle of all of the dorms, so it's also crowded all of the time. Also, no platforms.
There are also other gyms around town. Most of them are quite a bit pricier than the on-campus options. There is also a Planet Fitness in the mall (about a 10 minute drive from campus). If you're only into machines/treadmills, that might be a good option, but they don't have any benches or anything. I think you can get a pass for $9.99/mo.
PinkCow wrote: If they combined all of them, it would be a decent/average gym. But they're so small on their own that it just gets cramped with bros unless it's early in the morning. And no AC and fans that are NEVER ON.
Noyes
Closest to LS but by far the worst. Tiny tiny tiny. But it does have 2 OLY platforms, 1 rack, and a couple benches + dumbbell area. But there's almost always a line and the kids there are pretty pushy IMO.
Helen Newman
Slightly better than Noyes, but it's far away. No OLY platforms but 2 racks. It also has one of those cable stations for pulldowns and stuff. And again...so freaking hot. Even in December.
Teagle
By far the best gym on campus, and not terribly far from LS (~10 minute walk tops). 3 OLY platforms and 4 power racks + 4 benches and a cable station + some random iso stuff. Also, on the 2nd level they put all of the cardio/cybex stuff, so it generally keeps the bottom slightly less cluttered with bodies. But, go any time after 2 or so and it's wall-to-wall sweaty bros all up in your business.
Also, there's this girl on staff there who has got a thing for Taylor Swift/Justin Bieber and likes to crank that through the loudspeakers on max volume. And of course, the fans are never on. Good times.

Re: Cornell Class of 2016
from the previous posts, the gym info is pretty accurate. All the gyms have a lot of cardio machines (treadmills and steppers mostly) but the machines require time slot sign ups, and as previously mentioned can get extremely crowded during peak gym hours. All gyms also have a lot of free weights, not so much machines, unless they are leg machines.
Teagle is probably the best and biggest of the three (although thats not saying much since they are all pretty small) but it is definitely the most crowded due to this reputation.
Noyes is nice and probably closest to the Myron Taylor Hall. I currently go to Noyes a lot.
Newman is a little bit bigger than Noyes and has more options in terms of ab exercises. Newman used to be my favorite, but after moving into college town Noyes is closer and hence I go more often to Noyes. Newman is by far the farthest of the gyms (all the way on North Campus).
As for anyone interested in apartments, its a good way to go I feel. Cornell Law School only has an incoming class usually of 200 kids, so if your worried about making friends and being social (hence leaning towards living in Hughes) don't be. Ithaca is a small town, and with a class size of 200 all attending / using the same building, everyone will get to know one another rather quickly. In addition, there are only so many bars in collegetown that you are bound to always run into someone you know when you go out.
For those still deciding between Hughes and / or an apartment, if you ultimately elect for an apartment and are interested in roommates PM me and let me know. I would ideally like to live with either 1 or 2 male roommates. If you have anymore questions in regards to gyms or anything about Cornell, just post and ask. I will do my best to answer as I can.

I don't like the sound of those descriptions. I really regret not personally checking out the gyms when I was there.

This. My cardio is walking. As long as there exists some power rack in Ithaca, I can meet my fitness needs.Lavitz wrote: Good thing I don't care about cardio![]()

Thanks for the pics, Lavitz.
Also, if the gyms are crowded, we'll just have to start backyard boxing, kimbo style.

Our first mission should be to convert Hughes into a gym just for the law school, like GULC has.guinness1547 wrote:Law student lifting club is off to a nice start.

Do we wait for scholly info before applying for the federal loans? I'm afraid I'm missing something, since I've never gone through the loan process.

For all you gym rats:
It's true what they say about Noyes, but I've found that it's not that hard to avoid rush hour.
Some people who work out a lot and who drive have gotten memberships at Island Fitness. It's at the other end of town, so not a realistic option for most, but if you are concerned about space it might be an option for you.
