UW Madison Class of 2015

Post by vaguephoenix » Sun Feb 19, 2012 9:33 pm

Hey everyone. Didn't see a Madison topic, so I thought I'd start one. I thought we could all connect and network here.

Are you for sure going to Madison? I saw from the other thread you went there for undergrad.

Yeah- I got in on Friday, so as soon as I get the paperwork, I'm sending in for sure.

That's awesome. I'm really leaning towards Madison, but gotta figure out the $. Do you have any suggestions on places to live (apartments, property management company, neighborhood, etc.)?

Well, it depends. Living off campus is nice, but then there's a commute. Here's a google map that someone threw together about living in Madison.

Does anyone know if we need to apply for direct grad plus loans? When I tried applying, it said I did not need to for UW but on their website it says something about applying for it.

1L here. Last year, I just showed up in the summer and they had already assembled my financial aid package for me, complete with Grad Plus loans. I'd send an email to Rebecca Scheller to double check, but so long as your financial aid information and FAFSA are complete, you'll probably be fine.

Also, to the person who asked about housing: the vast majority of students live within a half-mile of Capitol Square, and walk/bike/bus as is convenient. You'll pay a lot more to live down there (although there are deals to be found), but the convenience factor is pretty awesome...especially when you're wandering home after bar review.

A few people live farther out - usually on the west side, down University Ave. somewhere. Rent is usually a lot more affordable down there, and neighborhoods are usually much more quiet. The downside is organizing your travel - you won't want to drive in every day, because it'll cost you $8-10/day to park. If you do choose that route, get accustomed to the bus system, which is pretty convenient (especially since the University gives you a free bus pass just before classes start each semester).

If anyone has any questions, feel free to post them up or send me a message. I'm not on TLS all that often (and our finals start next week), but I'll try to pop on as often as possible.

Has anyone gotten anything beyond our welcome packet and, if applicable, scholarship info? I'm definitely attending next year and I really want to get my deposit in/ secure my seat/ etc. Any idea on when that information would be going out?

I have no idea on the rest of the information, but there is no deposit for UW. You let them know you are attending using a form on the UW Law website, and failing that, you could always email the admissions office at the law school and let them know you are attending. Since there is no deposit, all it takes is letting them know and probably a digital signature verifying that you are taking your seat in the class.

I talked with them today, and they said that you will be getting two more packets in the coming weeks on financial aid and signing up for classes. As far as I know, the only thing that you need to do is tell them that your attending and then make sure your FAFSA is filled out and they will then offer you the loans.
