To all the suckers with 909 leases next year:
It's 5am, my Contracts final is tomorrow and my neighbors have kept me up since 3. Hope you are luckier than me!

Not to mention those super obnoxious people out on Willow Street who were doing who knows what.Jame5 wrote:To all the suckers with 909 leases next year:

I'm not one of those suckers.....yet. The apartment I'm currently looking at is ground level facing Willow Street. How afraid should I be?eandy wrote:Not to mention those super obnoxious people out on Willow Street who were doing who knows what.Jame5 wrote:To all the suckers with 909 leases next year:

Re: UGA Law Class of 2014
The noise normally doesn't bother me. It's bothered me maybe 4-5 times all year. I am a heavy sleeper, though. I have a little table fan that I turn on and it drowns out any noise.
Once someone was throwing furniture off their balcony and that was obnoxious, but normally it's just drunk people outside. There is not a lot of traffic on that street so it isn't too horrible unless you are a light sleeper.
Thursday night is the only time it has really really bothered me all year long and ordinarily I wouldn't have cared but we had a final at 9am. Undergrads are done with finals so they don't realize we still have them.
I honestly don't think it is a good reason to avoid 909 unless you are a mega light sleeper. The thing is that most other places in Athens are going to be loud. The people who use noise as an argument for 755 broad are hilarious--the reason it is quiet now is because it is empty. Next year it will be as loud as 909.
Also--just as an aside, people who are paying everything via their loans should know that 909 2 bedroom is really as expensive rent-wise as they should go. Any more than that and you are going to struggle towards the end of the semester. I know several people who have had to ask mom and dad for cash because they paid too much for rent.

Thanks eandy, I appreciate the feedback. I've been going back and forth between 755 and 909 for a while. Noise has been my biggest conern, but the prospect that 755 MIGHT be a little quieter doesn't justify the extra cost. I'm going with 909, and I promise to keep furniture throwing to a minimum.

What about the area near Dudley park and Oconee cemetery? I've been looking at a few places there, and was just wondering about the area.

Hey, I am not going to law school at UGA or anywhere in Georgia for that matter but I plan on practicing in Georgia after I graduate, I was just curious if anyone knew of any good magazines or whatnot that are geared towards the Georgia/Atlanta legal community.

Is anyone thinking of living on the west side of campus? I'm looking at Beechwood Pines for a one bedroom. Looking for Aug 1 move-in.

The only thing about the westside is that it can be hard to get a cab to take you home.
Dudley Park area can be OK. It's sort of street particular.

So if everyone is getting there in the beginning of august, is anyone interested in hitting up a bar the weekend before class starts? A meet and greet before the official meet and greet at orientation.

Re: UGA Law Class of 2014
I'm not going to UGA for law school, but I went for undergrad.
Y'all need to understand something before you live in one of those big aparment buildings downtown, or anywhere downtown. Athens is an extremely small town, and I really can't say enough about how convenient, cheap, and peaceful the "Boulevard" neighborhood is. It's a 10-15 minute walk to the Arches (gateway between downtown and campus), and it's full of young families and students who usually aren't making a ruckus. And you can have, you know, a backyard? A grill, maybe? Some space for yourself?
I was at UGA for 5 years and besides my first year in a dorm I lived in the Boulevard district. It's no suburb or anything like that, it's right in town. It's closer to downtown than Five Points and much nicer than living in some tower/loft downtown where you WILL be kept up by the 30,000 undergraduate revelers every Thursday through Sunday. As one of those kids, I really could not have cared less whether law students were busy studying/reading.
Ok, that's the last time I'll pimp Boulevard, but you really, really owe it to yourself to check it out. I always used Boulevard Property Management. Such a great neighborhood.
Good luck to you all. I hope Athens is as good for you as it was for me.

Alrighty then.... so we gotta pick out a spot and make this thing happen. I must confess I'm not from Athens, so someone with more experience will have to help pick out a good spot for a drink. I'm all for that 80s bar I've heard about, but that could just be me.
On a different note, is anyone else shopping around for a laptop for school. I'm a Mac girl at heart, but I want to make sure all the campus software and things are compatible. I can't get to finals and find out the bluebook software doesn't work on my computer. If you have more details, please share.

8es used to be really fun, but in December or January 9ds opened up. Now 8es is empty. The people who are there are super creepy. Neither 8es or 9ds are places where you to go to meet people. They are where you go at 1am to dance like a fool.IndigoPoet wrote:Alrighty then.... so we gotta pick out a spot and make this thing happen. You guys would do better to go to Magnolias(which I think has become the unofficial law school bar) or some place like that (Allgood, Capital Room, Walkers, etc.).

Some of you might be amused by this. I am only because I don't think there is any way they are going to finish all of the renovations by time school starts.

Yeah, I don't think it will be done either. Should make for wonderful background noise for classes.

As a UGA graduate and 1L this fall I have been to almost every bar in down town Athens. Magnolias has become the law school bar and would be a great place for all of us to have a meet and greet session. Enjoy the rest of your summer.

I guess summer is okay. I'm working until the end of June, so it hasn't totally begun for me yet. But I'm definitely feeling the nervous excitement of being only 54 days away from orientation. (yes, I'm counting)

Has anyone signed up for the Summer Advancement Program that runs from 8/1-8/10?
Or does anyone know what its really about or know anyone who's done it and is it a worthwhile program to attend?
