Good luck with transferring. Roughly 40 of us transferred to NU last year. I was not interviewed, and I don't think many of us were last summer. Maybe they're changing things up a bit?

Feel free to ask me questions about the process last year, I'm happy to help out as best as possible.

Hey! Thanks for offering to take questions.

Do you think the drop in number of students will affect this transfer cycle? (roughly 11% drop)
How many co-hosted courses were available with Kellogg last semester/year? If the new schedule is out, how many will be available next year?
How was the transfer transition?

First, I'm really not sure how it's going to affect the transfer cycle. Transfers are students willing to pay sticker, which is a huge bonus

To be honest, I'm not sure how it will affect the transfer cycle. My inclination is that the administration likes transfer students (NU takes a larger class than most of its peers, save Georgetown), and therefore there won't be much of a change.

There usually are 3 or 4 co-hosted courses with Kellogg. Accounting for decision-makers, Finance, sometimes an M&A course taught through Kellogg, and a random course like environmental business. You can always elect to take any course in Kellogg with the Dean of Student's approval, but it only counts as P/F, not ABCDF. Some are taught downtown at the part-time B-school, others are up in Evanston.

Transfer transition was better than I feared, so surprisingly good. I was rather anxious about leaving my 1L school, I liked my section a lot and gave up a decent scholarship. But NU is fantastic with transfers. The first email I received was my acceptance, and like 2 hours later they were getting me prepped for OCI. You will do a write-on competition with the AJD's, which guarantees that a few people with make Law Review, and everyone will make a journal. The transfer class wasn't too terribly social this past year, but I think that's because many of us found our areas of interest and made friends there. I also made some good friends on journal, both transfers and regular students. All-in-all, I have no regrets about my decision to move to NU.

Thanks so much for your input!
  • 1. Just wondering: I'm particularly interested because it seems like there is a large business focus/presence even in the law school. Is this true?
    2. How accessible are professors and are you able to get to know them well?
    3. Have you taken any of the co-hosted courses and how was your experience?
    4. With the "older" and more professional atmosphere of NU, because of their preference for work experienced people, what value do you think that adds the most to the school?

1. Yes it is true, and the school knows it. I've heard rumors that the law school is trying to expand its relationship with Kellogg. NU thinks of its status as a "b-focused law school" as a competitive advantage. For example, NU has a very popular entrepreneurial law clinic, a transactional-based program, which give law students some business experience. There's also a couple of economic institutes housed in the law school, like the Searle Center. NUInnovation (something like that) allows students from all parts of campus (think engineering, b-school, law school, etc.) to come together and work on a problem from different fields. I've heard that's a very popular program as well.

2. I've found the professors to be accessible, some more than others. If you do a clinic, you will see those professors all of the time. For more traditional classes, most professors have office hours, and a couple that I have basically sit in their office all day with the door open.

3. I have taken a co-hosted course, it was really a great experience. And it was much more challenging that I thought it would be, but overall I'm really glad I tried it out.

4. Having "real world" experience before law school makes you more attractive to potential employers, because NU students have a better idea of what to expect in the working world. I also have found students to be calmer about schoolwork generally, which adds to a much more relaxed and positive environment. But that might be the difference between doing 1L at a different school.

When I spoke to Dean Lee he told me that NU does not start making decisions until July 1. I don't know how true this is with people under review but that is what he told me. regardless good luck everyone! Not holding my breath because I have no work experience being a K-JD
