Columbia Transfer Waiting Thread 2014

Lulz NYU Sux. #IvyLeagueTho

Link to last year's thread (2013): http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 7&t=208688

Relevant information: First person was accepted 7/10/2013.

My Stats:
T2
Top 2% (GPA 3.95/4.0) (School only gives rank in 5% increments. The Rank Estimator says about top 2%)

FIRST DECISIONS RELEASED ON 7/10/2014

LSAC Statement on Good Admissions practices http://www.lsac.org/docs/default-source/publications-(lsac-resources)/statementofgoodadm.pdf

See page 3:

6.
After April 1, except under binding early decision plans, every applicant should be free to accept a new offer from a law school even though a scholarship has been accepted, a deposit has been paid, or a commitment has been made to another school. To provide applicants with an uncoerced choice among various law schools, no excessive nonrefundable deposit should be required solely to maintain a place in the class.

And With 40-60 slots at CLS and HLS should be plenty of room for both of us. Good Luck !

anyone know what the deal is with the faculty appraisal form? Do we need to submit that even if our recommendations are coming through LSAC? I've seen older stuff mentioning that it's only necessary for recommenders to fill it out if they're sending the recs directly to Columbia, but I can't find anything saying that on the current CLS website.

I'd say just do it. You don't want to find out last minute it is required and then be scrambling to get it in.

here's my response. I do not think you need to fill it out for LSAC-submitted recs.

"If your letters of recommendation are being submitted in hard copy form, then please use the Faculty Appraisal Form."

Wouldn't that mean you only need to fill out a faculty appraisal if the recommender is sending a hard copy as opposed to through LSAC?

can you link to where you are getting that explanation for the faculty appraisal form? I don't see it on the CLS website.

It's not. Go to LSAC ->Columbia application -> Forms tab -> "Faculty Appraisal" ->"If your letters of recommendation are being submitted in hard copy form, then please use the Faculty Appraisal Form."

Awesome, thanks. I know it shouldn't be a big issue, but I did not really feel like bothering my recommenders again.

I felt the same way when CounselorNebby made it seem like we have to fill it out. I maintain that we don't, though. No worries.

Good luck!

I hate undergrad certifications. I sent my UG the NYU, CLS, and HLS ones today all at once so the staff can't possibly fuck up sending them. My UG tries to get you to pay money for everything. Transcripts alone are $10 and all they do is put the fuckers in an envolope and send via USPS.

The total irony is that my current law school has been super swift and helpful with sending out all my 1L transcripts/certifications, and they know I'm leaving them! While my UG, who you think would give a damn about an alum, are so slow.

Same exact experiences. I waited 1.5 weeks for my deans cert (sent today) because the lady in registrar had to forward it to someone in judicial affairs (or something) and that person was on vacation. And when I called everyday to check up, she didn't know. Lul.

My law school was done in 1 day.

Oh, and my UG charged 20 bucks. Law school free.

Yeah. They gave me some shit about FERPA. And I'm like, "Do you want me to draft up a waiver to my rights under FERPA and sign it? Because I will if that will enable this process to move faster, then I'll send it to you within 10 minutes."

Haha, it did work by the way. They said, "No. We'll get them sent as soon as possible."

Last year it looks like people were accepted with status checkers saying "complete" and others with "incomplete" (listed missing components) still. Is that right?

Earliest "complete" -> accept = TH 6/20 -> W 7/10

Stats:
T1 (coming from PT program)
3.86 GPA (top 1%-5%, still waiting)

Also, I have sent everything in and confirmed they received it, but my status checker hasn't been updated since late May when I first applied and they got my LORS.

Anyone else struggling with this?

Best of luck!

Morbid curiosity, what were your stats when you transferred? Also, how do transfers fair at CLS OCI? Anecdotally I've heard they do well, but you'll obviously have better info.

I was ~ top 7-8% at a school ranked ~40.

Transfers do extremely well at EIP. In my class of ~40 transfer students, I think there was only 1 person who did not get biglaw. Everyone else got many offers. Offers came from firms that ranged from V5 to V100 and higher.

Does Columbia give transfers need based or other scholarships in 3L year?

How much debt were most of the transfers going to be in afterwards? (If you know)

Was it worth it?

Was it much harder?

Thanks!

1. No need-based aid to my knowledge. There are always emails going out about scholarships contests (essays, etc). I assume transfers can apply to those. But beyond that, I don't know of anything huge for 3Ls.

2. Hard to say. We're all paying sticker for 2 years at CLS, which is god damn expensive. So that, plus whatever we paid our 1L, which varies quite a bit.

3. Absolutely worth it. I landed a biglaw job that would have been unattainable from my previous school.

4. Not much harder. It was intimidating at first, and the student body can be a bit more engaged and well-spoken than they were at my previous school. But the quality of the teaching was about the same. I was nervous that I wasn't smart enough to handle the increased competition, but those fears subsided after getting my first set of grades back.
