I really don't know. What I do know is that the correlation between dinner/CBs was not perfect during my year (i.e., some with invites didn't get callbacks and some without invites did get callbacks).

If I had to guess I'd say that recruiting reserves a certain number of seats per office at the dinner, and that the reservation number doesn't always match up to the number of candidates that the offices want to interview. Or the attorneys end up wanting to call back more candidates than recruiting made reservations for. Or some extra attorneys show up. There's really no telling.

While I'm here I will also mention that BB callbacks for the Texas offices can be painfully slow. Mine took three weeks.

Since a few people have PM'd me, here's some generalized advice:

If you're interested in the the firm and are hoping to do a callback then I'd suggest sending an email to recruiting. Depending on how you felt about your interviews, you might also consider cc'ing the attorneys with whom you interviewed. Be honest about why you missed the dinner (spam, misread the email, etc).

There were people at my OCI who got BB callbacks without receiving dinner invitations, so I don't think you need to worry about missing it. The fact that you got the invite indicates that you're on track for a callback, and I don't think that missing the dinner will have any effect on that. Honestly I think it's like most firm events at Harvard in that it's designed to woo candidates rather than weed them out.

TDLR: Dinner invite probably means your on track for a CB, but it isn't necessarily a condition precedent. Similarly, missing the dinner shouldn't matter as long as you let recruiting know you're still interested in the firm.

I had both of these happen to me last year. Got a Gibson CB (and later offer) after not getting a dinner invite and then didn't get a CB from Baker Botts despite going to their dinner.

I wouldn't read too much into it.
I couldn't make the BB dinner last year and then didn't get a CB. I assumed missing the dinner must have contributed to me getting dinged, but it looks like BB might just be weird about dinners.

In at least one of the rooms, Jenner DC had a sign that said CBs would be Friday (and more firms should be that transparent about the process!)

I interviewed with Paul Weiss London (DL), and got a call from him last night saying the New York people would be in touch within the next few days for a New York office callback.
