DREAM Jobs Out of Law School

Post by blue16 » Mon Jan 25, 2010 2:43 pm

Hey guys,

TLS spends a ton of time talking about big law starting salary, big law markets, big law cuts, big law trends, big law life, etc. Once in a while someone will pop up and ask about some other job, trying to get more of a feel for it.

So for this thread, let's discuss information on the jobs we would all really want out of law school if debt was a non-issue. Maybe for some of you that's biglaw, but I feel like most people here have other aspirations. I think we should try and stick to entry level or only 2/3 years outta law school since that is on most of our radar. Include information about the job, the location, possible pay, reason why it's a great job, or any other information, just to get out of the mundane biglaw biglaw biglaw mentality, even if most of us will end up there anyway.....
----------------------------------------------------------------
Dream Job: ACLU Litigator
Location: Anywhere, probably Washington DC
Pay: Probably not that high, maybe $45k-50k I suppose
Reasoning: The group's been involved in so many landmark cases, it would be a great way to make a real difference and do tremendously interesting work.

Hmm this is an interesting question. I suppose we're leaving clerkships out?

I suppose I would definitely prefer a $100k job at a boutique firm that would require less than biglaw hours. Or perhaps something in-house for a major company. Of course, the reality is that these jobs almost always require biglaw experience.

I'm definitely interested in prosecuting for the DOJ at some point.

In a serious note.... I'd also like a boutique firm that pays good

boutique with good pay(100K) is second only to professional fisherman in the caribbean. I would like to be involved in civil and business litigation and maybe mediation, more work in court and with clients, less paperwork.

In-house counsel at Cabela's, where I assume the perks include all kinds of great hunting related stuff. :D Dunno about pay, or even if Cabela's has in-house counsel. But since it's a dream, I'd like, oh, I guess a $500,000 salary with a 9-5 M-F work schedule.

Something, anything, that pays money.

Seriously though, not directly out of LS, but, eventually, I think mine would be inhouse counsel to a sports franchise. Not like that's ever going to be realized, but, it'd be awesome imo.

Oh, and being a space lawyer. Just for the title.

I'd love to do in-house work for Nike. Solid pay, good hours, a little bit of travel and tons of perks. Plus, Nike HQ is in the PNW and near my family.

The other option of course, is to win the lottery and be a porn star just for fun. You know, when I'm not flying around in my magic hot-air balloon.

Environmental/natural resources litigation in a boutique firm in western Washington. The environmental and natural resources division of the DOJ would be great too, but I'm not sure I could live in the Northwest if I did that.

In reality I will be very happy with a mid to biglaw firm job where I can work in a natural resources/environmental practice area, any federal environmental or resource agency, or even the natural resources division of the state AGs office.

Anything travel related like that would be awesome.

Btw does anyone happen to have any offhand knowledge on that subject? Specifically legal jobs where one might get to travel, that'd be amazing, especially right outta law school.

US Attorney. I want to say "I represent the United States of America" whenever I step up to speak in court. Plus, the best lawyer I've ever seen/heard is a USA...much better than some big law partners that I saw in court. He was pretty inspiring.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
