I think your handle might be giving away your strategy to the lurking adcoms, Brittany . . . :| Could definitely make your hold out a little less effective.

Not such a big deal even if I am... we still aren't completely definitive, and I was just curious. It doesn't make that big of a difference anyway. :)

Figured I would throw this up here for those that did not know/are interested. Someone created a facebook group for the 2012 class under the name UT Law Class of 2012

Not yet. Gonna do some serious searching during ASW.

As far as housing goes, I recommend searching for a place in the Hyde Park area near campus, or failing that, getting a decent and quieter apartment further out on a UT shuttle bus line. PM me if you don't know Austin at all and would like the benefit of my very limited knowledge.
What about on campus housing? Is it any good?

Fuck it. I've made up my mind. Count me in. I'll be at the ASD in March.
Do you think I can trade in the $200 travel stipend for my seat deposit? Just call it even?

When did they offer the travel stipend? I'd like to get to ASW and the $200 would help a lot.

As a current UT undergrad let me offer some advice about housing (though most has already been said).

Avoid Riverside. The friends I have that lived there before moved out the second their lease expired. They said you occasionally hear gunshots and car/apartment break-ins are very common. It is the ghetto with a few newer apartments thrown in.

I live in west campus right now...in one of the fraternity houses. If you like noise and drunken morons 6-7 days a week then this is your place. It does have the best shuttle route though (shortest wait times and drops off fairly close to the law school) and walking - though a long walk - is always an option. Its overpriced as well.

Hyde park is much quieter with many grad students occupying the area. There are a few undergrads out there and so you occasionally have a few parties to deal with but its pretty calm for the most part. Still fairly expensive for what you get.

I am the least familiar with the Far West area. I hear prices are not too bad, but there are many undergrads and the apartments are older for the most part.

The arboretum area is probably the best bet for cheaper prices in a nice quiet area. The only problem is that traffic is terrible around rush hour in that area and on the way to/from campus. There is a bus route (not UT shuttle) that runs from there directly to campus.

If you can afford a parking pass buy one (close to 600 dollars). San Jacinto garage is literally right next door to the law school. Its worth it imo. The buses do not always have the best times - especially after 6. It also allows you to look at apartments in south and west Austin where the apartments are newer and less pricey. South mopac (from campus down) is nowhere near as bad as going north.

just my 2 cents

If you've decided and aren't on the list yet, please PM me so I can add you!

BTW: Far West FTW. Don't go further. The Arboretum is not practical for students. It is just way too far for a student who has to commute to campus every damn day

Count me in. I am just waiting on Michigan and UVA for possible help in scholarship negotiation.

The arboretum is not that far if there is not traffic...but there almost always is. I have a few friends there who love being out there and say the commute is not bad because the buses have wifi. I am moving out to the westlake area where very few students live and am just going to park in west campus for free and take the bus from there. (thats where I lived last year and it worked out great - only a 12-15 minute commute)

just wanted to add that i lived in the far west area during grad school & loved it. my apartment was at "the ridge" & was affordable plus very cute. i did have other friends at the same complex that had worse luck, so take that for what it's worth. like joesrevenge said, a bunch of the apt's are older so i'd be sure you ask to see the exact unit where you'd be staying before making a decision.

arboretum isn't necessarily too far, it just depends on what you want. if you plan on going out a lot downtown, arboretum is probably not the best idea. but if you're ok with treking in once per day and don't plan on spending every weekend downtown, then i wouldn't worry about living in areas like arboretum or further.

one caution for those living far-ish out: the distance is deceiving. mopac gets ridiculously crowded & your travel time will likely be MUCH longer than you anticipate. that applies to 35 too for that matter and 183 in rush hour.

hyde park is very cute. there are a lot of other great areas that tend to have less student residents, like enfield, tarrytown, zilker, south first, south congress, etc. some of those areas are expensive, but you can find a good deal. just might take a bit longer.

ok hope this might help someone. i'm so undecided about ut....... i love austin & definitely want to move back, but not sure if i want to be there for law school or after. being in dc & watching the 70-80 degree temperatures there is sure keeping ut on my mind 8) not to mention ut law is a great program!

PS wanted to add that i think going through apartment finders is a good idea. they can help you get a sense of the city & what's out there, at least to start your search. plus, if you decide to go with a place they show you, sometimes you can get a deal on rent!

Has anyone else received this? I'm curious to learn if they are sending this to everyone or only to certain 0Ls. FWIW, I have sent in my seat deposit and have signed up for ASD.
hehe, I don't want to make you feel not special, but I got one too. Sorry. :(

Well I most certainly did NOT get one, lol. Unless it's gonna arrive late, what with me being out west.
