I guess a downside which I am currently dealing with is the price of housing as it is VERY high around the area. I guess everything in general is pretty expensive but it is West LA after all. As for the campus, I personally prefer being a part of a larger university, though I know some people might not like that. I didn't visit USC so I wouldn't be able to answer any questions about that campus, sorry!
Thanks for the info. I like law school which is attached to the university as well. :)

owning a car in LA is really second only to air, water, shelter, and food...

well, i guess that would make it fifth, but you see where i'm going with this.

(don't live in LA w/o a car...you will hate yourself).

OK well I took the plunge and made my seat deposit the other night. UCLA for the win!

snlink, nice pictures! Does Westwood remind you of Hyrule?

Here's some pictures I took as well (also posted in the ASD/ASW thread):

snlink: Did you also visit USC? What did you like/dislike about the schools??
USC also has a very pretty campus over all. It is small, nicely planned out and very collegiate feeling. Unfortunately, the law building is old and really not in great shape. All the classrooms are windowless and the library looks a little like a bomb shelter. I believe that they want to build a new building but I'm not sure if that is going to happen in the near future. Campus wise, I preferred USC because it was smaller, thus a little more convenient. Building wise, UCLA law is a lot nicer. I rarely travel beyond the UCLA Law building.

UCLA is in a nicer part of Los Angeles, though it is less central. You are closer to the beach but you are a lot farther from Downtown. West Los Angeles has some of the most heinous traffic in Los Angeles. If you are looking at places to live outside of Westwood, know that a quick hop on and off the 405 freeway can be a real crawl.

Westwood is a lot more of a college student friendly area, while USC is really not in the best part of town once you get off campus. USC has cheaper housing in the area, but you might not feel comfortable being out alone at night.

Overall, I think you could be happy at both, though I think that the quality of the library at UCLA (where you will be living for the next three years) makes it a much nicer school to be at.

Bias Disclaimer: Undergrad at USC; Law school at UCLA; Put seat deposits down at both schools before deciding on UCLA; Still sports a USC license plate frame on my car and tries to fit all the USC football games into my study schedule.

Juliet, that is a very useful post thanks! :) It must have been hard for you to cross the line and go to UCLA from USC.

My own admittedly subjective impressions of USC: I also visited USC's campus and the law school and I was less than impressed. I just didn't like the vibe I got while I was there. As you said, the law school building is rather old and the overall feel I got was "stuffy." Your descriptions of the interior are spot-on. Plus I felt like the law school itself was sort of tucked away and apart from the main campus. Some people may like that because it gives more of a "small school" feel, but I kind of like being part of a big campus. I dunno, I kind of think law school is a big deal and the main campus should prominently feature that. At USC it almost felt like the law school building was an afterthought. I know, kind of extreme but again I want to emphasize - just my own impressions.

USC was pretty, but 1) did not WOW me the same way that UCLA's campus did, and 2) not even as pretty as UCI (my undergrad school), in my opinion anyway.

Also, I'm not crazy about downtown LA or the area around USC. When our tour guide was telling us that for late night studying you can request a security escort to the parking garage, I was like  Um... yeah. Not for me. I'll have enough stress as-is!

Oh, and trivial thing, but red and gold just never worked for me.

This is true, but the interesting thing about LA is that most of the action is not downtown. In fact, I would say UCLA is closer to most of the action than USC. I got the impression while visiting that there is not really a true downtown in LA.

to quote myself from another thread,
It just seemed weird to me that the rest of the campus [USC] is so nice but the law school looks like a dentist's office from the 80's.
i am a ucla undergrad who will be attending ucla law. with that being said, i believe any neutral visitor would have the same impression of the two schools. there is no comparison between the aesthetics and facilities of ucla and usc law schools, both inside and out. i was incredibly disappointed by usc's law school; all the posts above me are spot on. old, grimy, stuffy, congested, carpeted, gray. i mean no offense to usc law students, but if we're comparing the law schools themselves (free of academics), ucla is by far the nicer school.

It depends how you define "the action." Certainly, the social scene is not located primarily in downtown. But the Big Law is heavily concentrated there, as is a large proportion of the court system. (It means a longer commute from West LA to my summer internship for example).

:D I hear ya!

I suppose in a way I am lucky then: my ugrad colors were also blue and yellow (UCI), so all of my color-matching paraphernalia will carry over nicely! Score!

Back on topic: any new UCLA commits? Leonidas have you made a decision yet? It sounds like USC has almost won you over... Keep us posted on your decision eh? :)

I am 90% going to be at UCLA next year, just have to finish convincing myself that I wont hate myself in the future for turning down Georgetown.

I'm pretty much committed too. Sitting on a few hopeless wait lists that can sway me over though. USC took toooooo long to give me a decision, so if I don't hear by this week, that's it..

Haven't made my decision yet...I'm still on the fence....I would say that I am leaning towards UCLA (70%). I emailed one of the former members of my fraternity, and she (coed pre-law frat) has been trying to wholly convince me on UCLA - it's slowly working hahaha. I'll let yall know though.

Oh and undecided: only go to Gtown if you would rather practice on the East Coast (D.C.). I got in there too, but after hearing so many bad things about the social environment, I withdrew.

i'm going to fill out the housing form within the next few days. what is everyone planning on, living alone or with a roommate? my number one choice is a weyburn terrace studio, but i hear they are very difficult to get because of availability :/. are you going to fill out the roommate search form (available mid june)? if i live with a roommate, i think i'd rather be with another law student than a graduate student from a different field. what are your thoughts?

I'll be heading down there to look for a place next month. Indeed it is very $$$$. For those looking at Weyburn I've heard Dean Schwartz is very helpful in helping you to secure a place there if you shoot him an e-mail.

I'll be making my deposit tomorrow or Thurs. I'll go about my housing this way: try to get a studio at Weyburn, share room at Weyburn, find a place nearby, live in my car - ahha

if we don't get weyburn, what else are you all thinking? the other university apartments are soooooo far from campus, but they look pretty nice. i think i'd rather pay a little extra for a privately owned apartment close to campus rather than live allllll the way down veteran. any thoughts?

Not just Weyburn...

I'm applying for graduate family housing because - get this - since I'm married I don't qualify for Weyburn, even though I'd be living on campus away from my spouse. LAME. I really like Weyburn but I guess I'll be OK at University Village. The smallest they have is a 1-bedroom apartment, I'd just be happy with a studio. I don't plan on having that much stuff! :|

Woohoo! It's inexplicable, but for some reason I was hoping you'd choose UCLA. I look forward to meeting you this summer!

Oh, and when I went to ASD we drove around and took pictures (outside only) of some of the other grad housing options. I'll try to post them tomorrow if I have time.
