actually i disagree...tyler would probably be 3rd team or so..but even then, if you REALLY think about it? there are some ugly mother's out there. I just got back from STL. Did some apartment shopping and pretty sure I've settle on a place in the CWE. I was surprised at how easy it was to get around (I'm VERY directionally-challenged), and how little traffic there was. Delmar looked cool, but I didn't experience it (I spent my only whole night there at the Lumiere - a wondrous casino). Can't wait for the fall!

By the way, for all you Facebookers out there, we have a group started by one of our very own TLSers, so hope to see you there (facebook) and there (STL) soon.

I couldn't find it on the WashU website, but it's actually linked to on the very first post of this thread. Apparently some WashU students got together and put out a huge bulletin outlining a lot of stuff you'd need or want to know about WashU and St. Louis. It's from 2006, so some of the stuff is slightly outdated (I think the section on computers is most in need of updating), but it's a great resource.

As for the Lumiere, it just opened in December, and it's got a great looking poker room. I didn't play (I had a nice blackjack run and didn't want to ruin it), but they had a variety of games going on. DO NOT go to the President's (the sister casino of the Lumiere). I spent about 5 minutes looking around in there before I knew it was time to high-tail it outta there.

To be honest, my only real problem with Lumiere is the damn color scheme. And Missouri has some weird gambling laws. It's like $500 every few hours, (or maybe every hour i'm not sure)...the whole place is frickin orange. the poker room is small, but nice. And they have all the games you'd want. My only complaint is that drinks are not comped when you're at the table..which is disheartening and sad. but i'm sure we can get over it. The drive from CWE to the casino is only like 10 minutes too...not bad at all. Also, they're building a Four Seasons right there as well.

I've not heard of this before either. I have a friend who I watched lose over $20,000 into a progressive jackpot slot in less than 24 hours in Kansas City.

maybe slots are different? I know at the tables you have to give them your membership card and they keep track of how much you deposit at the table and it's $500 over every certain period of time? or maybe it's a st. louis thing? I really dont know. all i know is that you can't get in or out without hte card either...

The gambling law is a $500 stop-loss, and people can only get $500 every couple hours. However, I think the two-hour intervals are not on an individual basis but instead on a fixed schedule. For example, if the fixed intervals are every two hours starting at noon, then a person could get $500 at 1:59 and another $500 at 2:01. At least, this is my understanding of the law.

This is definitely the biggest problem. You had already told me, but I just wanted to verify, so I asked someone, "Are drinks free if you're playing?" They looked at me like I was crazy. Are Mississippi and Vegas casinos the only ones that do this, or are these people just not familiar with how casinos are run in the rest of the country?

I've been to a lot of jurisdictions. Most places comp drinks. I know however at one time California did not allow alcohol on the casino floor.

And the $500 loss limit is that you cannot purchase $500 in chips/slot credits in a two hour period. Not sure when the period starts/stops, though, since I never have enough to get close to the limit! So I think presumably if you bought in for $500 and then went on a great run you could play until your money ran out.

Yeah, I'm not worried about that limit. I won't be touching that. I know the casinos in Illinois don't comp drinks, and I've heard that Indiana casinos don't, either. What's up with the midwesterners? Give us that booze!

It's comped in AC as well, but they expect tips, and only at the tables (not the slots). My friends didn't tip the waitress and the waitress said to them in a very loud voice "Thanks a lot guys, I really appreciate it." I had a good laugh.

Me and my cheap-ass buddies in college developed a system where one of us at the table would tip a waitress the first time she gave us a drink, then stiff her on the next 2, until she finally caught on. Then a new waitress comes by, and we pulled the same thing (except one of the other friends would tip). You could get almost ten drinks on the night for just a buck or two.

And, yes, I know this makes me a low life. If it's any consolation, I sorta feel bad when I do it.

I'd only feel bad if she were somewhat hot and didn't sag in every spot imaginable. I found the waitresses at the Taj Mahal quite repulsive. I don't drink while playing poker anyways, so meh.

I mean, I hate to use a tired excuse, but I'm giving the casino quite enough as it is. I'll take myself a tip-free drink, thank you very much. I realize the waitress isn't reaping all the benefit of the fixed games, but there are plenty of places that you can go waitress at that don't have people in a "losing" state of mind, for the most part. I think making the choice to waiter/ress or bartend at a casino isn't a great choice to begin with (a bartender at one told me pretty much the same thing - that he doesn't get near what he does at a typical bar), so I can only be held to so much fault.
