Does need based aid exist?

Post by kareenak888 » Sun Nov 29, 2009 8:11 pm

Edited. I didn't want to have too much info out there.

Anyway... does need based aid exist (as compared to undergrad need based aid)?

I don't understand the need based aid for LS either?

How much is usually offered, and does it even exist, because i'm yet to come across someone that said they received need based grant.

The extent of most school's need based aid is federally subsidized loans, which you qualify for based on your FAFSA. However, a select few schools (I only know of HYS, though obviously there could be others), offer need-based grant aid, which does not have to be paid back. It is my understanding that even HYS require you to take out some federal loans to meet a 'student and family contribution' portion of the budget, plus living expenses, even for very low income applicants.

Columbia has "need-based" aid... although I'm convinced they mean "mostly LSAT-based and somewhat need-based" aid.

HYS gives out need based aid. From anecdote SLS is the most generous, followed by YLS and then HLS. Though the differences in the end are not usually going to be that substantial.

Boalt also gives out need based aid from my experience. Though I don't know how much that will change.

There is very detailed info about how HYS calculate "need" for need based aid on their financial aid websites. As others have mentioned, these 3 only give grants based on need.

Most other schools it is harder to tell what is what because they give aid based on a "combination of need and merit" which makes it pretty much a black box.

Nothing he said is at odds with your post... All he said is that HYS give need aid exclusively, so it's easier to figure than at schools where merit and need aid is mixed.

"These 3 only give grants based on need"

Point being, they are not the only three that give grants based on need, which is misleading information and at odds with my post.

You need to learn English...

EDIT: That DOESN'T mean "These are the only 3 that give grants based on need"

Uhm... that sentence means "The three schools in question give only need based grants,", not "These three schools and no others give need based grants."

Damn. And I was looking forward to an explanation of how an error in reasoning was involved. Oh well.

Don't give up hope, I'm eagerly awaiting Miracle's explanation of the logical reasoning problem GeePee was having.

You guys are mean to me!

It could of been that I read it wrong. I will let it go and come back to it in couple of days so that I don't read in to it to much/over think it.
