Likelihood of receiving scholarships with a GRE vs. LSAT score?

Post by snewman97 » Mon Aug 12, 2019 7:15 pm

Hey everyone,

I'm trying to decide whether to take the GRE or the LSAT to apply to law school (for Fall 2021 admission). I've done some GRE practice, and I'm confident that I can ace it with more study. I haven't looked at any LSAT prep, but the people I talk to assure me that it isn't very fun to study for. All of the schools I mainly want to apply to accept the GRE anyways. It seemed like a no-brainer!

Until I talked to one of my friends who recently graduated law school and is practicing now. She told me that although the GRE may do the job for admissions, I may face a dilemma when it comes to earning scholarships because a GRE score—even a nearly perfect one—against other qualified admittees who opted for the LSAT will not be competitive. She essentially thought overall it might not be in my best interest since going to law school isn't just about getting in, but also paying of course!!

I'm wondering what others think or have experienced. Has anyone been accepted without an LSAT score and still received good financial aid? The GRE is still so new in law that I'm not really sure where to look/who to ask. Any and all input is very appreciated.

Thanks!

I think your friend's intuition is correct. But I also think most schools have added the GRE to boost applications and artificially inflate their selectivity.

Bottom line is that no one knows if/how GRE scores will be considered for scholarships.

If you have a 4.0 or better the GRE might be a decent play but you're almost certainly better-off taking the LSAT.
