Where do you want to practice? Are you fine with the midwest?

Re: UIUC ($$) v. UF v. UH (in-state) v. Wake ($$)
I'll quickly bump this by stating the obvious, Colorado should not be in consideration.
And as far as gaining residency in the state of Florida, that's a pretty tough feat. And I speak from undergraduate experience. It most likely won't happen with any slight possibility unless you out-right purchase a home and pay property taxes for a year. Rather, what would be your ploy to gain in-state? Regardless, I think its doubtful. Barring scholarship consideration, this leaves UF as a pretty expensive option. X it compadre. Unless you REALLY want to live in FL.
Though UH is in Houston, they do have Dallas firms at least interviewing there. Your giving up prestige a bit in passing up UIUC.
Lastly, UIUC is a great school. Maybe you'd warm up to the idea of Chicago. You COULD get back to TX from there as well. Unlikely in making it reach to FL however.

Yeah, pretty much. I like CU, but for that price I might as well go to Illinois. I figure I could use Wake for scholarship negotiations though.snapdragon wrote:warflamingo, are Wake and CU off the table because of TX placement?

I doubt there is much difference in placement between Illi and CU. I could be completely wrong though. Baseless 0L speculation.thewarflamingo wrote:Yeah, pretty much. hmm interesting, I had heard and read that gaining FL residency was fairly easy, I will have to call the school.mez06 wrote:I'll quickly bump this by stating the obvious, Colorado should not be in consideration.

I think I would pick UIUC over Houston since the price isn't that much of a difference. Chicago probably wouldn't be too bad. Do you think the disparity in rankings between UIUC and Houston is that large or are they so regional that it really doesn't matter?

Re: UIUC ($$) v. UF v. UH (in-state) v. Wake ($$)
Ehh. Its a pretty big gap. But for someone who REALLY wants to stay in TX it wouldn't blow my mind if you did pick UH. FWIW, NALP shows 3 Dallas offices at UIUC versus 11 at UH.thewarflamingo wrote:heard and read that gaining FL residency was fairly easy, I will have to call the school.

Have you tried or thought about negotiating for $$ from UH !?!?
***EDIT*** And please do call and do more digging on the in-state tuition at UF. As I said from my experience, its pretty hard. Otherwise everyone would be busting the balls of FL's strapped educational budget to get that dirt cheap price-tag.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I had thought that it wasn't easy to gain residency in Florida for tuition purposes. I know in some states if you but property, I'm not sure if there's a min. amount, you gain residency. Florida land is pretty cheap these days, maybe you can do that?

This is where I read that FL was easy to gain residency...

Oh jeez do NOT go to FL for that amt. of money.thewarflamingo wrote:I was going to visit UF for ASD on February 25th which is the same weekend as UIUC's ASD, but now y'all are making me feel like I should change plans and go visit Illinois instead. I'm so conflicted.

What are your numbers that you got UIUC w/$ but are held at SMU? If I were you, I would do whatever it takes to get SMU or UT since you want to practice in Dallas. Re-take in February, re-take in June, re-apply next year, etc. etc.

Retaking the LSAT. I don't think any of those schools are worth it for the cost.thewarflamingo wrote:So do you suggest Illinois then or what instead?rad law wrote:Oh jeez do NOT go to FL for that amt. of money.thewarflamingo wrote:I was going to visit UF for ASD on February 25th which is the same weekend as UIUC's ASD, but now y'all are making me feel like I should change plans and go visit Illinois instead. I wouldn't attend any of these schools for that debt level. But if you are going knee deep in debt anyway, go to the best school (Illinois). It probably gives you the best chance of LRAP if you aren't one of the 20-25% that get a large firm job.

Re: UIUC ($$) v. UF v. UH (in-state) v. Wake ($$)
you should attend a cheap Texas school then. seems like Baylor would have made a nice scholarship offer, no?thewarflamingo wrote:I really want TX, just not Houston. I've never been to the midwest, but if it's anything like TX then I could be happy there. Illinois apparently has a good alumni base in Houston though, so I could probably come back to TX from there, but then I'd probably be stuck in Houston which is the problem.ArchRoark wrote:Where do you want to practice? Think you should go to UIUC unless you get into SMU or UT. Chicago is a great city, just not right now. Don't look at the weather.

Re: UIUC ($$) v. UF v. UH (in-state) v. Wake ($$)
This may seem odd, but if CU comes through with a decent scholly, I am considering them over my T14 acceptances. I am curious why everyone is voting for UIUC. Is it's placement that much better? I personally rather be "stuck" in the mountain west then the midwest.
