Solo practice out of school?

Post by Lawgiver1981 » Mon Dec 04, 2017 3:31 pm

Hi,
Is it wise to start a solo practice straight out of law school once the bar exam is passed?

no. not wise at all. not only do you not have any idea how to practice law, you won't know how to run the firm administratively either.

Reality will stack against you, but it's not impossible*. Coming out of law school, you won't have extensive training in how to actually practice law, will have minimal exposure to the areas of law you're trying to get into, and zero guidance on how to grow a book of business. And this is without really mentioning the basics of entrepreneurship and starting a new business.

When you graduate law school, your real training starts. Trying to go solo without any of that training will likely end in failure, particularly if you're financially reliant on the success of your legal practice.

*This sounds naive in retrospect. I just meant that it's probably been done, although as a rule this plan will fail
