Is Financial Mathematics a good pre-law major?

Post by Andrew66 » Thu Oct 19, 2017 5:56 pm

Hey everyone,

I originally wanted to major in math and economics, but my parents and university counselor have instead advised me to choose math and finance.

Is this a good major for undergrad if I wish to apply to law school considering that it is not very reading or writing intensive (my reading and writing ability is ok, but my math is much better)? Also, are vocational majors like finance looked down on?

Thanks.

Your major will have close to no direct impact on your law school applications, and you should not pick a major based on whether it will help you get into law school. however, your major can be helpful for specific legal jobs, i.e. stem majors going into I.P.. Finance could possibly help in oci interviews making it believable you want a specific corporate group, but this probably also requires good work experience. You can work on your writing on your own time.

The most important thing about your degree for law school application purposes is your GPA. An actual math major may not be helpful there. A law school will pick underwater basket weaving 3.9 over math 3.1 every single time.

This. If you're really good at math and think you can run straight A's fire away. Though if you have the skills, something that opens up the patent bar might be useful.

But if you can't keep a high GPA, pick a different subject before it's too late.

big picture, pick your majors based on employability outside of law school admissions bc it really doesn't make too much of a difference. sure come OCI it'll be a boost but your overall GPA is the real gatekeeper on whether you get into a law school where OCI matters or not.

i would stay away from finance unless you're at a feeder school.
