177/3.63. NU ED chances?

Post by ruthenium44 » Thu Jul 06, 2017 3:26 pm

See title. I will have 2 years WE @ Chicago law firm + 2 years in a different industry. I don't believe the GPA reflects my ability as I took more/harder classes than needed in undergrad, not thinking I would ever go to law school.

I know I probably have an ok chance at getting into a higher ranked school than NU, but not sure if I could get any money. NU has always been my dream school but since getting my score back there's a little voice in my head telling me to aim higher. Thoughts?

Nope, legal assistant. Not doing anything important but can get good LORs from attorneys.

Almost a lock for admission, I'd say. Wouldn't hurt to apply to Chicago early in the cycle either.

I think NU might like a little higher GPA generally, but I would think you would have a decent chance. IIRC, Jjcorino (http://lawschoolnumbers.com/Jjcorvino) did not get Ed with a 3.4 and a 177 (surprisingly). Still got great alternatives though and based on LSN your numbers should give you a great cycle. Hopefully, the higher GPA increases your chances decently!

I don't think you should ED to NU. Your numbers are strong enough to merit similar/better outcomes without the ED.

Youd think that would be yp but it's ed so that doesnt make any fucking sense.

OP, youre above the 25th for GPA, above the 75th for LSAT and presumably suffice the work experience requirement. I'd be terribly surprised if you didnt get it.

Northwestern's ED is not for splitters (even if the OP is not too drastic a splitter). As mentioned in other threads on this subject, it's for luring away the kids who have a real chance at HYSCCN. So a 3.4/177 not getting ED is not at all shocking. If that same applicant didn't get in (or at least waitlisted, depending on their WE), then that would raise an eyebrow or two.

Very tough choice. A 3.6 is honestly not that bad and the 177 is phenomenal. I feel like you might have better options but also 150$ at NU is a pretty enviable option to begin with. I feel like NU would give you that much without having to ED and then you'll probably have a lot more choices.

Based on looking at LSN for this cycle, nobody with a 3.6 or lower got $150,000 or above without being ED. I think OP could reasonably expect between $90,000 and $120,000 from Northwestern without ED. Someone got a 176 and 3.52 (closest I could find to OPs stats) and got $105,000. Someone with a 172 and 3.5 got $120,000. I think once you break the $90,000 or so mark at NU the scholarship awards become somewhat arbitrary based purely on stats (note: NU also considers WE highly, financial need, URM, and other softs). I think locking yourself in for $150,000 with a 177 3.63 would be a killer outcome. I could see OP getting a lot of $120,000 outcomes at the lower T13 peers (175 3.63 got $105,000 at Duke and 174 3.63 got $120,000), so if NU is his dream school I'd go for the lock on an extra $30,000 and not look back.

ETA: Disclosure am an avid NU undergrad alumnus and 0L

I have similar stats/work experience and asked this exact question at the beginning of last cycle. I decided against ED and ended up receiving a scholarship at UVA that exceeded $150,000. I technically "profited" but in retrospect, it was a pretty risky move. My final offer from UVA came after two scholarship bumps, both random and unsolicited (UVA's starting offer was 135000). Only two offers came close to UVA's initial number (of course, all were under 150k). UVA liked my application for some reason and I ended up feeling satisfied with my decision to forgo ED. If they didn't bite, I would've ended up at Duke or Michigan with 120000 (their standard offer for our numbers), or Northwestern with 105000, pretty upset that I didn't pursue ED.

I decided against ED to see all of my options, and would probably do so again (I wanted to know if I had a chance at the top schools). However, I think it's important to make that decision knowing there is a good chance of receiving a scholarship offer well under 150,000. Splitter cycles are crazy, you might grab a huge scholarship or get rejected or low balled by a "safety" (both happened to me).

If this is the case, 150k at your dream school is nothing to be "upset about" in terms of outcome. That's a solid scholly. NU doesn't limit your job options compared to schools in its range (5-14). You might be able to get 150k from Duke or UVA or Mich, but in the end I would assume you'd still choose NU due to it being your dream school? I say apply ED and still apply to the peer schools.
