3.93/178/International

Post by NextAutumn » Sun Apr 02, 2017 2:23 pm

Hi all, I was wondering if anyone has insight into how the T6 view international students whose undergrad GPA's will be lowered (what I feel is substantially) by LSAC. At my university (University of Toronto), anything >85 is considered a 4.0 and although I have a substantial amount of grades falling between 93-100, 6 classes worth of 4.0s I've received came from obtaining 87-89. This puts my adjusted GPA at ~3.7 from what I've been able to calculate. Do schools look at both LSAC & unadjusted undergrad GPA? Would my average softs, in conjunction with a 3.7 LSAC and being international, bar me from HYS? If I can somehow still get into HYS, would it be (generally) worthwhile to accept one of those at sticker over a lower T14 with $?

Thanks in advance for any info.

Do you get an LSAC GPA? Or just a generic superior/whatever rating?

Also, nice humblebrag.

If it says A A- B etc - it will be evaluated using those grades alone, the same way an American GPA would be evaluated.
If it's in percentages, with no letter grades, it will be evaluated using those percentages, making them correspond to LSAC's (which would result in an artificially low GPA, which would be screwy - there might be a way around this. If that's the case, you should talk to your school and get them to put letter grades on your transcript.)

American schools and Canadian schools curve differently, but correspond to the same percentage of the class. Ie it is much more difficult to get above an 85 at a Canadian school than an American one. So there is no 'GPA adjustment' that needs to be done by LSAC if the letter grades are there.

Whether 3.93 or 3.7, HYS (especially H) will be open to you with a 178, even if you're international.
My transcript has both percentages and letter grades. I was calculating my LSAC GPA under the assumption they'd use the percentage over the letter grade, especially because of the difference in what each percentage accounts for (i.e. 90 at UofT is an A+ but only an A- at most American schools). I didn't know that letter grade takes priority over the percentage if your transcript has both, this definitely answers my question and changes things for me. Thank you very much, I appreciate it!

I graduated from U of T last year and will be attending one of HYS this fall. To my knowledge, LSAC will use your letter grades to calculate your GPA. You're good, I'd be surprised if you aren't admitted into at least one of HYS. Also, whether a full scholarship at a lower T-14 > Sticker at a T6, is completely subjective and is contingent upon numerous factors chief among them are (1) Your financial situation (2) Your career aspirations.
