Is anyone else confused by the non-refundable deposits they mention? $500 looks normal for a seat deposit for a private law school but they mention 3 separate deposits totaling $3000!

Is this normal?

does it go towards tuition or something?

*Sorry if this is the wrong thread to post this on, I was just surprised to see the size of the deposit.*

My understanding is that the deposits at any school are put toward tuition. $3000 is more than any other that I've seen but next to the total bill for 3 years of tuition and COL in DC 3000 is pocket change.

This is true, but let's be honest - most people need loans and aid to pay that $180K plus COL. Most people do not have $3000 sitting around right now. I'm curious about the timeline for these three deposits (just checked my email and only says the first--$500-- is due April if you want to attend).

That is my concern too. Has anyone received the mail packet yet? Hopefully it goes more in depth. Or I guess I could just call the admissions office....

Could you also tell us how much time passed between receiving your acceptance email and the postmark date on the package and/or date on physical letter? It's been a week since wave two, and I still haven't received anything in the mail.

My box was sent 11/30. I got the email 11/20. Thanksgiving was also between when they emailed me and sent the package. I would assume you should be getting your box soon.

I'm above both 75ths and have been under review since 11/08. Anyone else in the same boat? Starting to get antsy!

I received the box and it does not go into more detail about the seat deposits. I assume they will be credited towards tuition... or else that would be a pretty steep extra fee.

So I just logged into the GW Law Portal (they just sent the e-mail with log-in info) and they say this on the site regarding the seat deposits.
-
To reserve a seat in our Fall 2018 entering class, you must submit seat deposits, the total of which will be credited to your fall tuition upon matriculation. Our deposit requirements vary based on the program/process through which you were admitted, so please be sure to carefully read the deposit information listed below:

1) First-year students admitted through the REGULAR DECISION process are required to submit three payments for a total seat deposit of $3000:

a) $500, due by April 15, 2018 (If admitted after April 1, please refer to deposit deadline stated upon your admission.)

b) $1,000, due by June 1, 2018

c) $1,500, due by July 1, 2018
-

So it looks like the deposits definitely go towards tuition but unless scholarship and loan money comes early the deposits will be due before any aid is available.

I’m in the exact same situation at a few schools, I don’t get why they give you dates if they’re basically gonna publically skip over you and come back it’s bs

I've done a little research into the loans process and the money will not be distributed to us until after the first day of classes (it first is disbursed to the tuition, fees, housing, etc. through GW and then GW gives you your refund). So this means they expect us each to come up with $3,000 personally, no help from our loans. Then our first semester's refund will be "inflated" (their word) because you will have the $3,000 put towards your student account. It is pretty worrying, considering how common it is for people (like me) to be literally relying on loans just to be able to attend.

PS: Any other admits attending the February 7th reception in D.C.? I found out about it through the GW Portal.

Decision made! Went complete 11/15, under review 11/21, decision made 12/14. I'm very impatient and am currently a bundle of nerves, does anyone know if it typically takes the full 3 days for them to let you know?

It took the full three days for me - but it was an offer of admission! Do they still do the three-day wait for dings? That would be so mean.
