I suppose they are worried about numbers like every other school and assume 174s would start jumping ship to Harvard and Yale. That number is also Hamilton/Rubenstein territory and maybe they’re attempting to mitigate that risk.
I do also wonder to what extent complacency really does set in among folks with really great numbers. We’d never be able to actually know or quantify that, but maybe it really is that better applicants tend more toward laziness or even self-aggrandizement in their PS, etc. making them WL candidates rather than admits even as folks with lower numbers get in.
Plus maybe people with numbers that strong usually apply as K-JD? If I'd had a slightly higher GPA I might've been more likely to consider it, but it seems like Stanford really likes WE
I think it's probably just a sample size thing, since I have a hard time believing people 1 point higher are just getting complacent, especially since 175+ also sees a little boost. It's just a weird, very encouraging anomaly.
As a 174 person, can’t say I agree. Haha.

Submitted yesterday! I did just one extra essay - I felt like one was perfect for me and doing two would be a try-hard moment they'd easily detect. Fingers crossed....

You can zoom in on the graphs on LSN. Doing so may illuminate there there a lot more data points that you just aren't seeing.
I mean the difference between these (even adjusting the first to 4.0 173 the difference is pretty pronounced:

The MyLSN results are only showing the applicants who applied before December. Goes to reason that if you apply Dec-Feb you run a higher risk of riding a WL
 thank you so much!! This makes me feel a little less awful about my chances

Someone please correct me if this isn't the case at Stanford, but anytime before Thanksgiving is generally considered early in the cycle. It shouldn't be a problem.

Especially given that they usually don't admit people until after the New Year, I can't imagine applying in November will be any issue. They'll almost certainly have reviewed your file by the time the first decisions are rendered. A November application shouldn't be any problem.

Has it been adequately explained why the mylsn data for Stanford doesn't seem to match up with their publicized medians?

checking in. going to be active and not just stalk TLS this cycle. [i posted this in my 7 favorite threads. can i do that?]
not sure how this works but here goes:
GPA: 3.6 [blah state school. easy major - Psychology]
LSAC GPA: 3.56
LSAT take one 163: [sat for it cold, no prep. so essentially a "diagnostic" only not ... because it was the actual LSAT]
LSAT take two 178: [almost cancelled]
URM: AfAm Female
softs: somewhere between nonexistent and unimpressive

Belated check in -- submitted late October. GPA just under 25th, LSAT just over 75th, non-URM (but otherwise diverse), from California. Top choice over literally anything else, including RTK at NYU or Yale. Just trying to get back to California, use their solid LRAP program, and eventually land a state gov gig.

If I'm going to be going home for a week for the holidays, do you think there would be students around for tours and such? Live on the east coast now but my family is about hour and a half drive outside of Stanford, so that would be the only way I could visit. I'm guessing most students would be home for the holidays too, but there's got to be some locals who are still on campus, right?

Communicate now with those who not only know what a legal education is, but can offer you worthy advice and commentary as you complete the three most educational, yet challenging years of your law related post graduate life.
