Dear Cornell admissions: Why are you the only T15 that requires C&F about a speeding ticket? Why? What good comes of this? Major deterrent to my application.

EDIT: Unsolicited fee waiver. 170, 3.9+

Other T15 schools require traffic ticket disclosure. NYU and Penn off the top of my head.

Guys what did you put in the "who influence you to apply" section? I don't have family graduated from Cornell, so I don't feel like putting N/A in two required sections.

And is mentioning a friend who went to Cornell for undergraduate a good idea? She did talk to me about her life in Ithaca literally every day though...

Putting N/A is fine, but I think listing your friend would also be fine as long as you make it clear that hearing about Ithaca from this person was a positive influence on your decision to apply.

Back when I applied, Columbia definitely asked for this, but Cornell didn't. You're going to need to dig up the speeding ticket info for bar admissions in 4 years anyway, so might as well do it now and keep track of it. For my bar app, I was able to just go back to my Columbia app to see what I said about my speeding ticket.

Totally missed the Penn note, so thank you. But NYU's section is small. Cornell's is quote odious relative to NYU, at least in UX/presentation. A lot more detail requested.

Checking in! Hope to submit early this week. One question that I'm sure has been asked and answered: Does section 8 of the app suffice for a Why Cornell? Or is an additional addendum recommended?

I think the consensus is that section 8 suffices!

I definitely agree. It'd be pretty hard to fill out that section and write a full Why Cornell without seeming redundant anyway, I think.

Per some random dude on google that I read a few months ago, every NY school requires this thanks to the phrasing of a C&F question on the NY bar.

Does anyone know what the deal with interviews is? Do they offer them to everyone, when do they start offering, etc? I just applied yesterday, I'm just curious as to if I should be expecting an interview request anytime soon!

So if we don't do a full Why Cornell it's not going to hurt us? They're in my top 3 and I don't want to do anything to hurt my chances.

I mean, I’m no authority on the matter but I don’t think it would hurt you. I really think the section on the app is sufficient, but if you want to write a full Why Cornell I guess in theory you could just write “addendum attached” in that box on the app. That said, I don’t see why they’d have that section on the app unless they prefer that people keep to that length.

I also don't see why it would hurt you, as long as you have substantive stuff to say that will actually add to your application. If you end up repeating yourself for some of the addendum, it probably isn't worth it.

Omg opening this thread made my stomach turn. It’s very early for decisions already.

I went complete in the later part of September, and am now “ready for review.” No decision yet.

I'm sorry to hear this happened to you. Just curious, did you write a Why Cornell or anything of the sort?

Cornell has a new dean, right? I wonder if the new dean is looking for things that we don't know about yet.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
