Do you have friends there who you can talk to about life/activities that they're doing?Platopus wrote:So is it conventional wisdom that a Why Duke is necessary? I'm above both 75th's but I really can't get myself to write something sincere. I wrote a Why Duke, but it sounds cheesy, and I've flipped through the website and brochure about a dozen times each, and I'm just not all that excited.
I would definitely consider attending, I just can't write a good hype piece for shit.
That's been my strategy for the why X. I also can't get excited about posed photos and shiny admissions brochures and have to give myself some human connection.

Yes it is necessary. I have to repeat it every year: do a legitimate, sincere why Duke. Duke has a long history of rejecting people above both 75s for either not writing one or writing a half hearted one. Remember, Duke is the 3rd smallest t10. Yale, Chicago, and Duke all have about 200 students. So they do actually care about this. Go read each of the last 4 years Duke applicant threads for all the empirical proof you need.sev wrote:Do you have friends there who you can talk to about life/activities that they're doing?Platopus wrote:So is it conventional wisdom that a Why Duke is necessary? Anyone else applying to the LLM program as well? The application mentions that the optional "Why LLM" program can be done but I pretty much made that the focus of my "Why Duke" essay. Do you think that both are necessary and if so what should I instead put in the "Why Duke?"

It took like 3-4 days last year IIRCcardboard0917 wrote:Does anyone know how long after September score release they start to send out the next round of PT invites? My score jumped a lot and I'm hoping to snag one.

Checking in.
Hoping to submit in the next 2 weeks.
Duke was my dream school as a small child (bball, y'know?), now I'm actually going to apply!

submitted pt today. Their employment numbers are great but tbh I'm scared to go to north carolina as a member of the LGBT community.

As someone from the South, you’ll be fine in the Research triangle or inside any other big city. You might even be pleasantly surprised with how strong and vibrant the community can be in many areas of the South.dm1683 wrote:submitted pt today. this. pretty much every part of NC that is worth going to is very left leaning and not at all like the stereotypical NC you see or read about. Durham in particular is annoyingly liberalprincipalagent wrote:As someone from the South, you’ll be fine in the Research triangle or inside any other big city. yeah but I'm worried about the laws the state passes, like that bathroom bill. I mean, I would much rather live in a state like Illinois or California where the state government is looking out for me.proteinshake wrote:this. pretty much every part of NC that is worth going to is very left leaning and not at all like the stereotypical NC you see or read about. ah, fair point, though I can't imagine it being that bad again (at least for the next few years) now that Cooper is governor. plus I doubt Durham / Chapel Hill would even comply with a law like that, but I understand why one would be worried!dm1683 wrote:yeah but I'm worried about the laws the state passes, like that bathroom bill.
