Does anyone know whats the difference between the alumni versus the group interviews? I'm getting the sense that alumni is for borderline whereas group is for YP.

Re: Georgetown University Law c/o 2021 Applicants (2017/2018)
I declined two (technically three - one was in September before I even applied) also due to work conflicts. I finally just emailed them earlier this week asking that they go ahead and review my app without an interview (while also saying nice things about Georgetown and expressing my interest etc...). I've gotten into some pretty good schools so I felt it was a risk I was willing to take, but I have heard of more than a handful of people getting in without interviewing.shermy wrote:I've received two group interview invites, but had to decline both because I've been out of town for work during both interview dates (I'm a consultant, so have to travel a lot). Will that adversely affect my chances? I feel like they'll think I'm blowing them off or "not interested enough", but I truly can't attend due to work, especially when they only give a week's notice before the interviews. Anyone else have to decline twice in a row?

Well I just thought that a one-on-one interview makes more sense because the adcom can get a better idea of the candidate. A group interview just seems less personal so I assume the adcom is just gauging interest. But I could be completely wrong. Full disclosure, I was given an alum interview.ChutzpahSaxa15 wrote:Can you explain that thinking more?Mma038 wrote:Does anyone know whats the difference between the alumni versus the group interviews? I guess the only way to infer interest might be if they accept the interview or not. Just because during the group interview there wasn't any kind of opportunity to say why we want to go to Georgetown. Alum interviews are definitely when they want to learn more about someone in particular - so I can see what you're saying about borderline. Dean Cornblatt said that he feels he's better at his job when he gets to meet people in person even though he won't get to know them at all - which makes me feel like there's not much of a purpose for the group interview other than that.Mma038 wrote:Well I just thought that a one-on-one interview makes more sense because the adcom can get a better idea of the candidate. In either case, you've sparked their interests. Even if it's true that alumni interviews are for borderline people, there has to be something appealing about you that makes them inclined to investigate you more.Mma038 wrote:Does anyone know whats the difference between the alumni versus the group interviews? Idk about group interviews but for alumni ones my interviewer literally said that if you get to that stage they already like you then he fills out an evaluation and basically give you the thumbs up/down before your file goes through one last review by the adcomsMma038 wrote:Well I just thought that a one-on-one interview makes more sense because the adcom can get a better idea of the candidate. I can feel you. I have been researching a lot about it in this and other forums. The opinions seem to be divided but most people thinks that alumni interviews are for borderline candidates as you said. However (as someone that has been invited to an alumni interview), I don't feel it is that bad. You could have been rejected without an interview, and if they are making a (more than probably) busy alumni take the time to interview you, it is because they are interested.Mma038 wrote:Does anyone know whats the difference between the alumni versus the group interviews? In my case my LSAT is in their median, I have a NR GPA (studied abroad), I'm an URM and have a couple of other "not really common" characteristics. I am assuming that I'm getting an interview precisely due to those features.
By the way, it seems that your odds of getting accepted increase substantially if you have had any type of interview. However, good luck and keep me posted once you have the interview!

Mine was "Georgetown Law Group Interview Invitation – Washington, DC"littlewing67 wrote:Question for those with interview requests:
My email title said “Invitation to Georgetown Law Alumni Interview”. It explicitly says alumni, so for those that had the group interview did it say invitation for group interview or did your email also say alumni interview?

It was actually SO fun. It's...12 people I think? With the dean. You split into small groups and basically discuss admissions scenarios, and then report back to the group. I think he's just observing your willingness to speak up in group but also (very importantly) listen to your teammates and be able to reiterate their opinions. Sense of humor, willingness to jump in and have fun. My group of 12 was so great. Everyone came ready to play and we all enjoyed it.littlewing67 wrote:ThanksBush v. What’s the format of the group interview - I’m just curious. I just imagine everyone sitting in a circle and it being super weird. Like how do you group interview people?

I don't know about all this talk about those being invited to alumni interviews as being "borderline." I see many people who had the interview with stats that are well above median. Maybe it's more accurate to say that the stats are not good enough to be auto-admit, but I think I saw someone with a 176/4.0 who took an interview (maybe that was for YP). Long story short, I'm not sure any of these explanations for interviews are any more than speculation.

Re: Georgetown University Law c/o 2021 Applicants (2017/2018)
I think it's pretty clear that all of this is speculation and I don't know that there can be a consistent pattern. Obviously, some people will have to do alumni interviews regardless of their stats based on location; there are only so many places where you can get a group of 10-12 compelling applicants who submitted around the same time. Even in major cities, if you apply after they've already done a few group sessions, they might not be able to scrap together another one.mishpt1 wrote:I don't know about all this talk about those being invited to alumni interviews as being "borderline." I'd be surprised if anyone from my group interview didn't get in just based on the caliber of the discussion. So I think there is a chance that they have some just for the purpose of ensuring that no one is an obvious psychopath and that people match the way they come off in their applications. Others might be a compilation of more borderline people. And some might just be the pool that they have in a given city.

Yeah, probably a good idea to weed the obvious psyhos out of the applicant pool . . .

Oh no!!barcafan202 wrote:I mistakingly sent my GULC Diversity Statement to another school instead of changing the heading/file name. I corrected myself and emailed that school the correct version, but did I just shoot myself in the foot by blatantly using material from another app like that?
Is it just the file name or was the content different too?
Coincidentally, I think something like this is one of the hypos that gets brought up in the Georgetown group interview, and if my memory of what my friends said Dean Cornblatt thought about it serves and his opinion is representative, then... Yeah you probably just shot yourself in the foot. You aren't dead, but you might be limping across the finish line.
Sorry!! That really sucks.
