I propose an alternate explanation: an employee in the NYU Law Admissions office randomly selected 2/3rds of the applicants associated with completed files, sent them a meaningless, innocuous email, fired up TLS and watched the world burn.

Here's a theory- I went complete Dec. 2nd (applied 11/30) and did not receive an email. Did anyone who applied on Dec 2nd or later receive an email? I think admissions is just backed up, and they sent that email to everyone who applied in Sept., Oct., and early/mid Nov., who are coming up on (or already passed) the 8 week mark. Thoughts?

Guppies, you’re making entirely too much sense. Crazy conspiracy theories only.

Applied 10/13, UR2 as of 12/21, did not receive the email...but I wouldn't be surprised to hear that recent applicants may not have received the emails either, makes sense to me.

I applied the first week of November and no e-mail.

I feel like with those dates, you're about to hear something very soon (next wave for sure)! So maybe for some amount of people who didn't receive (and applied awhile ago), it's because they are finding out next wave. For the rest of us, we just applied and there's no need to tell us to hold still yet.

Alright, so maybe it went to sept & oct applicants, and -worst case scenario- maybe a few early November applicants who they would like to wait a little while on and compare to the larger applicant pool?

Got “the email” today also.

Seems like the people who got "the email" have good stats. Makes me think it can't be bad. I'm borderline and didn't get it, applied a million years ago and still UR1.

What's a million years ago?

Hmmm, well maybe the email was only sent to people who are UR2. Those few applicants, who are UR2 but still did not receive an email, are likely to be included in the next wave of decisions and thus did not require an email. It seems like no one who is UR1 received an email..... No one lose hope!! If you're UR2 and didn't receive the email, they just need more time to review and there's not always a rhyme or reason to your pile. I think everyone is okay!

Some people lat year who didn't get the email, or at least right away, and were under review saw that it was sent when they looked at the mailing section on their status checker.
I'm UR1 since early December and didn't get anything in my email or status checker! This is such a weird situation. I'm gonna resist worrying about it though since it's impossible to tell what we can learn from the email.

same. But it's so hard to resist worrying!

My feeling is the email for sure definitively means one thing: you havent been waitlisted or rejected yet so I'll take that. And if you didnt get the email, its still too early in the game for dings/WL (for NYU at least) so I wouldnt take the lack of email to mean that you're about to get bad news.

Overall, I think that if admissions wanted us to know that we were held, waitlisted, rejected, they would just do it. They have no need or incentive to send secret subtle messages in vague general emails or to give us hints of impending doom. Since we're all vying for spots its easy to forget that the schools are also competing with peer institutions, some of whom have a very fast turnaround time or a more predictable admissions process (i.e. standard timeline for most applicants across the board, predictable decision waves, etc.). I think we should all try to take what the email says at face value, that we should be assured that they're diligently reviewing applications and thats it.

This email can only mean one thing....... that you're still under review.

We got a similar email last year, but it was later in the year. Don't read too much into it, it doesn't have any secret meaning, other than that they are still reviewing your application.

I also did not receive the "pseudo ding" that many have seen today.
Can’t delay it much longer - the invites for the programmatic scholarships come out next month.
Would a special scholarship application perhaps move your app along a little faster since they have to make an admissions decision before they can send out invites? (He asks hopefully after submitting 4 days before the deadline)

Curious about this too - submitted a week before the deadline. Programmatic scholly invites go out end of February right?

Just another data point. I completed 10/10 and my last
Ur date is 10/30 ( not sure if it’s UR1 or UR2)
And I got the email today. Really hope it’s not a bad sign.

Looking at last year, no, applying to a programmatic scholarship didn't make your app move faster. Plenty of people were still waiting as the scholarship notifications came in during the last week of February, even if they had applied to one of them.

Applied 9/25, UR2 since 12/4, got the e-mail yesterday.

I dunno, I'm not optimistic honestly, but I'll not stress too much about it! We'll see... NYU was one of my biggest target but I know it's hard...

I'm thinking it means there will be a large wave of waitlists for us.

When do you think the next acceptance wave will be? My application went under review in early December & became UR2 on 12/30. I haven’t gotten any email yesterday or so. Hoping it’s a good sign
