I've got my own interpretation based on context, and wondered how well it matches up with others:
$: a small scholarship, less than $10K/year
$$: a modest scholarship, $10K/year or more, but less than $100K total
$$$: a big scholarship, at least $100K/year, but not quite a full ride
$$$$: a full tuition or more

How are other folks using these terms?
$ - 0-25%
$$ 26-50%
$$$ 51-75%
$$$$ +75%
The percentages are better, because the cost of tuition varies so much. For example, $75,000 wouldn't even cover half of tuition at Emory, but it would be more than full in-state tuition at UGA.

Yeah, it makes some sense to use percentages. I'm not sure that quarters of tuition are the exact method I'd pick, though, given the presence of some schools that give stipends. Since we don't see a history of using $$$$$, I'm kind of grasping for what feels right to be grouped with stipends into $$$$. $$$$ feels right for tuition that's been reduced to a positively European level, but $45K/year reduction at a ~$60K/year school doesn't feel comparable to a full ride.

Maybe 80%+ is $$$$?

Maybe cut in thirds? So each $ sign is up to a third, with $$$$ meaning full?

That's a really clean way to break it up, and makes a lot of sense.

I've had people who left me on "read" without texting back, and even that didn't prepare me for law school decisions (looking at you HYS)

I have always interpreted and used something like this:

Where percent are of tuition only, not COA.

$ =~ 1 year tuition (0-40%)
$$ =~ 2 year tuition (41-80%)
$$$ = ~full tuition (81-100%)
$$$$ = Full + Stipend (101%+)

Imprefect, so say tuition was ~$60k and you were awarded 100k, that isn't really 2 years worth but I would still lump it into $$

That sucks :( . Hope it wasn't anywhere you had your heart set on.
My feelings are not hurt. I'm expecting a rejection or waitlist from 2/3 of the schools to which I applied. But if you don't play, you can't win.
Re-upping this to say I just got my first T14 admit.

I don't think so because they don't yield protect, but maybe the intense competition from this cycle changes thing. I know some people write them to convey enthusiasm too. That's definitely not necessary though

Would getting no money from a school suggest you won't get any from higher ranked ones either (assuming acceptances)?

Not necessarily. It's also early in the scholarship game, so that same school may throw some at you later on.

I wrote one for Chi bc my pie in the sky dream outcome is a Ruby. I say write one if you're gunning for big time money or on the outer margins.

That's interesting :lol: I didn't write one for the same reason. I thought if I showed too much interest, they wouldn't try to snatch me with a Ruby. I'm definitely the idiot here aren't I :oops:

So what are you all expecting for this week? I'm hoping for a wave from NYU and Northwestern. Should we not expect another wave from Penn until January?

I'm expecting Northwestern toward the end of the week and tentatively hopeful Stanford will make calls (maybe KH sped up the review process?) so I can stop stressing about it.
