What are other things (besides applying to scholarships and doing research assistantships) to offset costs of living at Irvine? For example, can students work as Graduate Assistants in resident halls?

Can confirm that SIR is not binding but just a formal way to say you will attend (since no deposit is required). So if you decided not to attend after submitting SIR (possibly myself) you are free to.

If you live on on-campus housing, you could easily keep your housing budget to less than $500 per month.

RA money will depend on your professor. Some say they need you for 10 hours per week and they mean it. Some will work you more hours. Some will be flexible and let you dictate how many hours you work. You make about $15 per hour I think. I can't remember the exact amount.

After 1L, you could try and work part time for a smaller firm in the area. A lot of students did this. But of course you need to consider how this will affect your post-grad opportunities.

Some people worked as lsat tutors. But you need a certain score to do this.

I don't know that anyone did Uber, but it seems like that could be an option too.

I have posted before about law school funded positions. Perhaps a quick search will bring those up.

What do you mean by "affect your post-grad opportunities"?

If you want to do public interest, some employers might care that you worked for a firm (I most definitely do). If the firm is family law, you work there for four semesters, and then you're trying to get an enviro job, you might have some explaining to do. Just lots of variables to go through. It's just something for you to think about when the time comes.
