It used to be commonplace. It still happens, but it's very atypical. I've never had a professor at UF that made you do it. I don't think there is one who runs his/her class that way. However, there are definitely some professors who will grill you. FSU offers a full ride, UF only 65%. As a Gator undergrad I may not be spending any more time in Gainesville...
