If the $$$ difference is large enough, anything is possible. Full ride at WUSTL vs. sticker at Cornell, plus a convincing e-mail? Yeah, they might budge. I'm not aware of any list that Cornell uses if that's what you're asking.

It groups Cornell, Gtown, NU and Duke as being like a 'tier' that you can negotiate merit aid between. Not sure how true this is, but I wanted to share it.

As that thread notes, the tiers are not set in stone, and it lists scholarship offers at inferior schools as a possible negotiating chip. But yes, if it's another lower T-14, that's better than a T20. And the advice on how to word e-mails is solid.

Yeah, I suppose that's kind of the general consensus for negotiating. To just negotiate within the range of where the school is ranked. I think some schools actually have a list of schools with which they allow negotiating. I know Berkeley has a list, not sure about others though.

Last cycling when I was negotiating I found that by having a compelling story with the negotiation helped too. Like a scholarship and at home living story to my local T1, and how good it is for the market I want, etc., etc. Only worked for some schools though because there is usually a large difference in rankings.

yeah I just thought that, since Cornell has more in common when it comes to medians with the T20 (UT/UCLA/Vandy) instead of its peer T14 schools, they could be used to get Cornell to up their $$. but Cornell has more in common with the T14 in literally everything else.

Checking in! Cornell is in my top 5, only thing I'm hesitant about is the weather. I'm from Queens (NYC) but have gone to UG "upstate" and the winters can be brutal. Really interested in the death penalty clinic and I love love love Ithaca it has a super hippy liberal vibe and I fit right in.

So I really like Cornell for the apparent quaint feel of Ithaca and small, elite class. However, I am a Florida native. Would I die there?

How did employment go for people? Did they generally get what they wanted?

Generally, yes. There are always some exceptions, which is true at any school. The exceptions were people with really bad grades and / or social skills. Even if they didn't get what they wanted, in many cases that was getting NYC biglaw instead of CA biglaw. Sometimes it meant getting PI, midlaw, or a magistrate clerkship instead of biglaw. Or, technically I guess you could say a number of people got biglaw instead of what they wanted, but that's also pretty typical since people who say they want PI become risk-averse and don't want to skip OCI, then they end up in biglaw. In general though, almost everyone had good outcomes. I think I may have known one person who graduated without a job, but I'm not even sure about that.

We've had a few Floridians. They are still alive as far as I know.

Has anyone gotten a fee waiver for Cornell?

I've gotten ones to places like NYU, UVA, Duke etc, but haven't for Cornell or GULC.

My stats are GPA just under 25th% and LSAT over 75%.

Has anyone asked them for a merit-based waiver and received one?
