Checking in. Submitted today. LSAT: 75+ GPA: non-reportable/superior. Feeling late, on top of blackbox uncertainty.

In via phone call this morning, 9:14am PST, area code 510, was dean tom. Submitted 11/23, complete like 11/30 I think? And UR 12/19.
Above both 75ths, wrote four page PS and a why Berkeley. Also local. (Berkeley is my top choice). Hope this helps someone!

With you on this. Just a guess, but I think those of us UR since November have either been passed to faculty review or dinged...lawlzschool wrote:My pleasure... wish I had more assuring news :/kiwi50 wrote:Oh ok haha. Thanks lawlzschool!

Totally agree--hoping for Faculty Review, though and feeling kinda optimistic. I'm a data freak so I've spent a while on LSN and it seems like only really high [by comparison to me] stats people have gotten in. Hoping that they threw those of us median peeps into a pile to be read again. Also idk, it seems like comparatively few people have gotten in but maybe that's a sampling issue more than anything else.genjustice wrote:With you on this. UR since October here. But I also don't think Berkeley's accepted as many people as other schools have yet (Noting from the general lack of movement on this forum and on LSN). So maybe they're just slow - I'm hoping they're just now getting to median applicants and we'll have some more waves soon. Seems to me they've had fewer waves than other schools have had.genjustice wrote:With you on this. Do we get notified if we go under faculty review or the status checker just stays at UR?

Yeah, I got one and am UR since 12/15, but I heard people talking about faculty review and such. Do they tell you if you have been moved to that or just wait to contact you until a decision?sorence wrote:They shoot you an email when you go UR.ray.bee wrote:Do we get notified if we go under faculty review or the status checker just stays at UR?

What's the difference between regular UR and "Faculty Review"? And does that carry any kind of connotations worth noting?Keilz wrote:They tell youray.bee wrote:Yeah, I got one and am UR since 12/15, but I heard people talking about faculty review and such. there was a TON of discussion on it on last year's thread. I would search it there for specific information. It's bound to be asked over again here tooarmc808 wrote:What's the difference between regular UR and "Faculty Review"? Was curious about this too and found this regarding faculty review in last year's thread:armc808 wrote:Thanks for the heads up, I'll give the 2019 thread a look!Keilz wrote:there was a TON of discussion on it on last year's thread. Faculty review means your application is not good enough to be admitted straight by Dean Tom, but you are a relatively strong candidate and the admission committee (comprised of admissions team, students, and faculty) will take a look at your application again. The tls consensus is there is about 13% chance to get it once you make it to the faculty review. That is nominally better than 9% from the general pool, but it is really hard to say whether the competition in FR pool is higher or lower in the end (both the best and the worst applicants are screened out, so it all depends on the initial ratio, which is a big unknown).
I don't think it is about numbers. Berkeley seems to be the most lenient of all T14 schools when it comes to numbers. Also I am FR now and I am at the median LSAT and above the 75th GPA so I wouldn't say I have weak numbers by Berkeley's standards. Obviously something in our apps made Dean Tom hesitant to immediately reject or accept, but there is really no way of knowing what it was about our apps that made him want to seek out a second opinion. The reason probably varies with every case, maybe someone has poor numbers but great SOFTs or vice versa. Either way it could be worse! Can say that it's not just for people with weaker numbers. What I'm telling myself is this: Dean Tom said that he accepts people who experience has told him would definitely be accepted by FR. This would mean that his decision to accept people is based on having seen people with similar applications be accepted often enough in the past. (all this goes for rejections as well). So, those of us in FR aren't necessarily borderline; it may just be that there's something about our applications that makes it difficult to make that call with any certainty (splitters, unusual majors/previous career paths, less-known UG institutions, that sort of thing where it's harder to predict how FR would act, is my guess).Yeah, I wouldn't call it a waitlist, just a different review process for people with (generally) weaker numbers.I wouldn't say we are necessarily on the fence. If you make it to FR it means your app is strong enough that they would consider admitting you. Faculty just want to determine a specific percentage of the class themselves. But in the end you do get an extra level of consideration and softs can have a huge impact.Faculty Review, which is sort of a preferred waitlist type thing where applicants on the fence get put before a committee made of professors for an extra level of consideration. (From what I understand, at least, anyone and everyone feel free to correct me).what's FR?

Berkeley's admit rates are nowhere near that low. I think it's something like 25% now. Maybe during the peak years it was closer to 10%Christinabruin wrote:Faculty review means your application is not good enough to be admitted straight by Dean Tom, but you are a relatively strong candidate and the admission committee (comprised of admissions team, students, and faculty) will take a look at your application again. Would it be safe to say that between UR and a decision it would be at least 2-3 weeks? I feel like Berkeley moves so slowly
