So I'm above the 75% LSAT but between the median and 25% GPA... Thoughts on writing a "Why Michigan?"

Since their class size went up, is it safe to speculate that those at median or below are treading dangerous waters for admission?

Hey I was in a similar boat (I actually was below the 25% percentile GPA though), and I think my "Why Michigan" essay really helped!Bob loblaw law blog wrote:So I'm above the 75% LSAT but between the median and 25% GPA... Thoughts on writing a "Why Michigan?"
Remember that a big thing with Michigan is collegiality, so if you can maybe give an experience where you worked as a part of a team and tie it to wanting to attend the school, that could give you a boost.

Thanks so much! Yeah I think I'm going to write one, was about to hit that submit button but decided to hold off. I've got Friday off, so I'll chef up something then.

+1 although I'm actually at median GPA, pretty well above 75 last. the kicker is I emailed them last week and they literally said "it looks like you'll get one" in their response. I have Michigan on my car profile too. I will give them like another week and then I may reach out again. I'm not trying to be pushy but 70$ is 70$ and they were pretty clear about it.patttt wrote:did anybody else not get a hidden waiver and/or would someone know why i didn't? lsat and gpa are both around or above the 75th

I just got an e-mail with with a waiver today so maybe they're just a bit slow on it. GPA below median, LSAT above 75th.

Update regarding waivers: I had previously received one via LSAC but also received an email with a fee waiver the other day so be on the lookout!

How do you figure out stuff like "collegiality" being a big deal at a certain school?gsy987 wrote:Hey I was in a similar boat (I actually was below the 25% percentile GPA though), and I think my "Why Michigan" essay really helped!Bob loblaw law blog wrote:So I'm above the 75% LSAT but between the median and 25% GPA... I'd recommend googling "[insert law school name here] dean interview." You can find some good info about what is important at that school.RamTitan wrote:How do you figure out stuff like "collegiality" being a big deal at a certain school?gsy987 wrote:Hey I was in a similar boat (I actually was below the 25% percentile GPA though), and I think my "Why Michigan" essay really helped!Bob loblaw law blog wrote:So I'm above the 75% LSAT but between the median and 25% GPA... That's smart and also using TLS can be helpful too! For example, I'm actually going to Michigan right now.. So it's always good to have some secondhand sources.RamTitan wrote:That's a great idea; thank you!KatCoco wrote:I'd recommend googling "[insert law school name here] dean interview." I mean I could find things about the school that I really like, but I don't have family in the area or know people who are alumni or anything like that.
It would basically be "here's what I want to get out of a legal education and here are stellar programs and resources you offer that would help me achieve that" or something like that.

I think for Mich it would still help. Show that you did the research, tell them what you want in a law school, tell them explicitly that you want to go there. Also "Here's what I want and here are the stellar programs you have" is probably a more compelling reason than "I have family in the area"ProductofUnreality wrote:But if I don't?KMart wrote:If you have a legit reason, it won't hurt you.ProductofUnreality wrote:I'm in the same boat and curious as well. i think both are arguably compelling if you explain it well enough. but more importantly, i think you should write it! it appears to matter a lot to michigan, and i've never seen anyone here say they regret writing one. it's a couple hours of work now that could make a world of a difference.Dr.Degrees_Cr.Cash wrote:I think for Mich it would still help. Checking in. I sent my app in the first day they were open, August 23rd, but I haven't received a status checker login email yet. Has anyone else who has applied already received their login info?
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
