University of Houston Law Center c/o 2019 Applicants

Post by txgirl21 » Wed Oct 14, 2015 8:08 pm

Hi guys! I figured I'd start a thread for us applying for the class of 2019. :D

Has anyone submitted their application yet?

I took the June LSAT and earned a 155, so I took October LSAT and I'm patiently awaiting the release of the scores. They are set to be released on Wednesday 28th but hopefully they'll be released by that Monday, so I can hurry up and submit my app.

My application also went complete as of 10/26. I don't believe they start reviewing until 11/15.

File complete 10/16/15.

For others curious about when they'll get a decision, based on lsn figures, it looks like you can expect a decision before Christmas if you've already put your app in. No guarantee of course, but based on past trends that is what can be generally expected.

Current 3l also happy to discuss UH. (And if any currently attending students checking in ever want to talk about finals or classes feel free!)

& @ IsThisForReal:

-How does Houston place in the job market in big TX legal markets such as Dallas and Houston? LST numbers only tell so much, after all...

-How does it compare to other schools you applied to and why did you choose it over those?

-I feel like UH really benefits from being in a large legal market and outperforms peer schools that are in smaller cities. In big law, for example, Houston places like 15-20% each year, whereas a higher ranked school like University of Washington place around 10% each year. We see similar things in schools such as BU and BC with big law numbers outperforming some higher ranked schools, since they are located in large legal markets. Can any current students speak to this? How much does UHLC benefit from being in Houston?

That's all that I can think of for now...

-almost all of us work in Houston and we absolutely get hometown advantage for mid law small law. I know a few went to NY or Chicago, but I can only think of three from our class. A handful each go to Dallas, Austin, or San Antonio. I think Dallas was second in our year, probably 10 or so of my section that I know accepted. I should mention this is mostly a group self selecting for Houston and a few of the Dallas guys just couldn't get the Houston office.

-personally I picked for the price (practically free) and husband and I wanted a coastal city with job opportunities in his industry. We found Houston, loved it, and decided this was the place. If I wanted a different city I definitely would have reevaluated (smu for Dallas for example). Also if I wanted big law my calculation would have changed and ut would have been more attractive. Let me know if you have more specific questions.

-big law: yes our top 20% has a shot, no it is not a good shot until higher than that. Many students strike out in that range every year. Yes if you are top ten you can out compete out of state schools, and for Houston firms there is some help in being from uh even when competing with ut. The benefit for being in Houston is much greater at the mid law or smaller level. If you really want big law only then think hard about your goals because this may not be your best plan. If you are dead set on Houston and can afford missing big law then uh can get you there handily. If you have particular practice areas or goals in mind I can give you more specifics. We have more in the mid law range in niche areas than I expected.

I really do love the school and I had a great outcome, but I want to give as honest a view as I can because I know that everyone is different. Please don't hesitate to ask anything else here or pm me if you like

I chose UH because I narrowed down work cities to Houston for various reasons. Coastal town in the south in a state with significant agriculture. UH was cheaper than UT, and has a good patent program. And I was really disgusted with UT's staff when I went to visit. The career officer that would've been my go-to had some major philosophical differences and it sounded like it would impact my opportunities and advice quality. Overall I felt like the staff here was a lot more helpful and easier to talk to. I'm very happy I ended up here and my professors are really awesome.

I'm a 1L, not from the area, so I'm gonna skip the other questions. Don't feel like I have enough knowledge to give a good answer.

I didn't end up choosing UH, but your job opportunities will generally be limited to Houston. For Texas, UT can get you pretty much anywhere you want to go. Otherwise, UH for Houston, SMU for Dallas. Maybe throw Tech in there if you're committed to working in West Texas. That's not to say you couldn't go to Dallas from UH, or to Houston if you go to SMU, but generally you'll want to go to school in the market you're targeting.

My impression was that if you want to work in Houston, UH is a great option.

Wait, it says "Current Status: File In Review" on 11/20, is that something else?

I really have no idea. Last year's initial decisions came out towards the end of November and beginning of December. Im not sure if the new Dean has anything to do with the delayed decisions this year, possibly?

Anyone have any idea if they help subsidize visit costs? Just getting hopeful on results and trying to plan out visits to schools (a bit tougher for those of us currently in the working world so requires a bit more planning ahead)
