Agreed. Also a bit odd that Stanford aren't listed in the LSAC LGBT survey. Not the sort of place you'd expect to be LGBTQ unfriendly, but still.gobears!! wrote:I totally was unaware of that fact that Chicago has 0 LGBT faculty-very surprised actually. Good resources!

I wonder whether it would be helpful compare the attitudes of the local communities that surround these law schools, particularly when it comes to states or localities that don't have anti-discrimination ordinances for things like housing.

Hey y'all. Wondering how many people chose to identify as LGBTQIA+ etc. on applications where this was asked (NYU and Columbia are the ones I know of)? It definitely surprised me that this was a question on the application.

Re: c/o 2019 LGBTQ Applicants (2015-2016)
I am struggling with the LGBT questions on the applications. Thanks for including the "Q" BTW.
Backstory: I am in a monogamous marriage with someone of the opposite sex. I am madly in love with him and we live life as a straight couple. If I had it my way, I would never live life without him.
My issue is that I am bisexual. Prior to my marriage, My friends were aware of this fact and my family had suspicions. I actually thought I was a lesbian before meeting my husband. Attending high school in an ultra conservative area, many of my friends identified as LGBTQ and we stuck together.
Here is the question. I identify as monogamous. I would feel like a fraud if I put that I identify as LGBT because on the surface no one (not even my close current friends) knows how I feel. In my heart I know I am not straight. I am thinking about just not answering the question. So far my applications have these questions unanswered. It may seem like I am over thinking things but this is more than just an application issue. This is about being true to myself. What are your thoughts on what I should do?
My apologies if I come across as a whiny jerk. This really is important to me. I feel like this is more about interguity than sexuality. My husband and prelaw advisor have not offered any useful advice.

Re: c/o 2019 LGBTQ Applicants (2015-2016)
heeeeey!
Just wondering - how many of you are planning on writing a diversity statement about being LGBTQ? I'm a little torn about it...
On the one hand, I'm lucky to have never really been disadvantaged or ostracized for my orientation (I'm a gay man) - so I don't have one of those "it gets better" stories of overcoming hardship etc.
On the other hand, would it be weird to check off the LGBTQ box on the application and then not say anything about it? Would I be missing an opportunity?
Background - if I were to submit one, I'd probably write about living abroad for the past few years in a country where being openly gay is super hit-or-miss (in some areas it's basically the west village, and in others it's more like the middle ages...) - though I've been living in the west village part pretty much exclusively, so it feels a little disingenuous...
Thoughts?

Re: c/o 2019 LGBTQ Applicants (2015-2016)
Got it. The reason I questioned it is that honestly I am not out to many people and while by the time I'm in law school I'm hoping to be more open about it and get involved in groups on campus related to it, I kind of felt like I hadn't earned the right to identify as LGBTQ+ on my application. I chose to anyway, figuring that if they were asking it probably couldn't hurt, and it's not like it isn't true (if anyone were to ask me directly what my sexual orientation is, I'd be honest about it, I just haven't had the "ok so here's me coming out" conversation with many people yet.Muiraquita wrote:darlenealderson wrote:Hey y'all. I did. While I don't think it'll make a huge difference either way, I know some schools (my roommate is a 3L at a t-14, and very involved in their admin stuff) are really trying to diversify and get more students from different backgrounds, because with a few exceptions the legal field is still pretty homogeneous both racially and when it comes to LGBTQ representation,
Plus I figure if it gives any sort of boost to my application, might as well.

+1.Muiraquita wrote: I totally think you have that right. Just because you're not fully out to everyone or not really involved with the LGBTQ community doesn't mean you can't still identify as a part of it.
