any word lately on scholarships?

o shoot, do we have to write an essay for scholarships? when is that due? totally forgot
I think FAFSA is due 2/28 and the scholarship app is due 3/15 - unless I'm mixing them up with someone else.

Same here ^^ Just got wait listed via e-mail.

Oddly enough the Dean, in his e-mail, said no LOCI, additional documents or letters of rec are wanted...? Normally schools encourage LOCIs and supplemental documents, campus visits, etc. when you get wait listed, no?

Their website says they welcome LOCIs when you are wait listed... Seems confusing and contradictory to me. Has anyone else had experience with the wait list at U of W?

Thoughts anyone?

It looks like it can only be submitted through the admitted students page, so I'm assuming we aren't being considered. That would take UW of the list for me...
i think once you are admitted, you can submit the essay. i wld stay on the WL, theres nothing to lose, only something to gain

if i dont get $$$, i.ll be withdrawing, so pls do stay on

I just got my financial aid award. Not FAFSA, just from UW. I submitted the financial aid application about a month ago.

Is anyone else concerned about the UW's drop to 28th in the US News rankings? I know that to some extent the ranking is arbitrary but I'd hate to be in my 2nd or 3rd year and see a drop into the 30s or 40s ouch.

Are y'all confident enough in the strength of regional placement or do you think the slip is a real cause for concern? Also job placement rankings seem to be pretty low amongst various assessments or at least in reference to the overall ranking UW Law enjoys. Anyone have thoughts on that?

Wha? UW fell?? jk jk
In all seriousness, the drop should be no problem. UW is a regional powerhouse. I don't even remember what UW is ranked right now--it shows how much I care. I'm just looking at its location in Seattle and employment.
Still sounds like a good school to me.

I just got this PM from someone who knows his stuff and it makes sense:

"Not overly concerned. UW is mostly a regional school and since its still significantly better than other area law schools (Seattle U, Gonzaga), Seattle employers will still prefer UW grads over anyone else.

I think UW dropped because they are stingy with money, as many "median" students will turn down UW sticker for ND/Emory/WUSTL/etc. scholarship, which hurts UWs numbers and thus their ranking. But dropping four places doesn't matter in the eyes of the firms that hire UW grads, which in the end is all that matters."

Still, I'm really hoping UW can be a bit more generous this year with scholly. I'm sure there are many people (including me) who would love to go to school in seattle at a great school rather than going to school in the midwest/south regional school, but can't due to lack of scholly.

mcmand wrote:Re: rankings. If you're going to work in the Northwest, your best bet is UW. If you're going to work in Seattle, you absolutely should pick UW over a T20 school. I've had friends from T10 schools get turned down for jobs in favor of UW grads here. That's just the culture in the legal field in King County. They want to see that you have ties.
If you look at historical data for UW's rankings, it has vascillated between 24 and 34 over the past 10 years, endlessly back and forth. The lowest I could find was in 2002 (46 or something), which was right before the new building was opened and the law school was still stuck in its miserable old Condon Hall. In other words, you shouldn't put much stock in minor shifts when it comes to UW because it doesn't really signify anything.

Re: in-state tuition. If you're not an in-state resident already, don't count on it. The law school itself doesn't even make residency decisions, it's done by a university-wide office that is very, very strict. You might get some scholarships to bring you down to in-state or lower, though.

Re: scholarships. Depends on both your need and your stats (of course). Just apply and get it in early, and negotiate if you can.

Re: waitlisting. If you have high stats and you applied to a bunch of other schools, don't be surprised. UW is very careful about admitting people it thinks will actually turn over into a matriculation. If they think you're hedging your bets, don't be surprised when you don't get admitted. Also, they say they don't want other letters of continued interest, letters of rec, etc. but they absolutely will accept them (at least they did for me, I was a waitlist admit), and they can make a difference, especially if you have the aforementioned problem of giving them the impression you're not serious about UW.

Good luck! - UW Law 2017.
Thanks for the info. What would you say about students who go to top-20s and have strong ties to Seattle? i.e. Born and raised in WA, family in Seattle, and planning to live/work in Seattle.

Anyone else just get their scholarship application in? I probably shouldn't have waited, but here I am.

Any idea what the turnaround is?

I also submitted mine on the 15th, received notification of my financial aid award by email today.
I submitted mine about a month before the deadline. Received notification of my lack of financial aid award by email today. I will be withdrawing, hopefully someone here gets in!
