20 Point Increase in 2 months?

Post by NUMDS » Tue Jul 18, 2017 10:51 pm

I have an LSAT diagnostic score of 146. I was wondering if it would be possible to get the score up to 166 within a 2 month period. I am enrolled in a Testmaster's class currently.

I don't think so. It took me almost 4 months to score 20 points higher on a pt than my diagnostic, and that's just hitting it on a pt for the first time.

I'm honestly in your same boat. I had a 142 and I'm hovering around a 148-150 now.
People said on some of these forums a few years back said that they increased 20 points in 2 months, or another one said they increased from 149-171 in 6 weeks.
They did it. I'm sure it was hell but hey, it paid off in the end.

We have 7 and a half weeks till game day. Let's kill it.

Kinda depends on what you were struggling with, how much time you have to practice, and how much exposure you'd had to LSAT concept before.

Like if you took the test completely blind and just got wrecked by games because wtf were those and what happened to my time, you probably can fix that in a hurry just by learning how games work and coming up with a game plan to attack them.

On the other hand, if you're just generally a slow reader and had trouble with the reading comprehension section, it's going to be a tougher climb.

The good news is that I guarantee you that the LSAT will still be around after they give it two months from now.

Will echo the "if it's logic games, yes. If the other two, no" sentiment. I increased 11 points in 3 weeks of studying, but almost all my errors were in LG.

There are a huge number of variables that go into answering this question. I was going to address as many of them as I could but then I realised I'd have ended up writing a 3000 word TLDR post.

So briefly:
1. What is the composition of your diagnostic? If you went 1/22 on LG, then you can gain 10-12 points just by getting LG to a consistent 0-5/22. Combine that with minor improvements in LR and RC from basic familiarisation and you're already up close to 15 points.

On the other hand, if you're one of the people who naturally did well on LG, but bombed LR and RC, then you don't have as many easy points to pick up.

2. How blind was your diagnostic? I went into mine completely blind. For all I knew the RC section was about finding themes in short stories. Pretty much all I knew was the titles of the sections. I also had no education on argument structure. For this reason, I was able to improve from 33-35/50 on LR to never falling below 40 after reading Manhattan LR because I now knew what each question was looking for and had a basic understanding of how arguments are structured. Similarly, my RC jumped from 17/28 to never below 20/28 just by reading about the section for about an hour.

On the other hand, a person who has taken classes in critical thinking, logic, and/or argumentation will have less free points to gain after their diagnostic because they already should have some understanding of argument structure and terms such as necessary/sufficient conditions. I took a critical thinking elective after I began studying for the LSAT. I can say quite confidently that if I had taken the class before my diagnostic I'd likely have gotten 152-153 instead of 150.

And a person who either studied for, or familiarised themselves with the LSAT, before their diagnostic will have less points to gain from familiarisation.

3. Your natural talents. Some people will never break 160, some will have a diagnostic above that.

Not everyone can be Dave Hall.

4. Time. Do you have the ability to study for the LSAT full-time? Or are you limited to 10 hours a week. More time is better within reason.

Personally I would find that to be incredibly difficult.

I started off 2.5 months ago at a 160, currently stuck at around 172 so go figures.
