One reason this rumor exists is because there's confusion about whether the test is "curved". Some people think there is a "curve" to get the right percentile distribution for each test, and taking the test with an easy group makes it easier to get a higher score.
In actuality, the test is not "curved" after-the-fact; it is "scaled" based on how difficult they expect it to be. The scale for converting your raw score to your score out of 180 is set prior to the administration of the test. This scale is calculated based on testing out each section of the test in the variable section (non-scored) over the course of several prior tests, across a wide sample of test-takers throughout the year.
Even if, for example, you conspired to have 20,000 people take the test in June and leave the entire test blank, it would not affect how the raw score is converted to the scaled score.
