What does it mean to have "ties" somewhere? (For BigLaw or whatever)
Like that means you grew up there and your immediately family is from the city and lives there, right?

IIRC if you have friends to a city or parents had a house there that you frequently vacation counted as ties. I think it's how you sell yourself tbh.

Like let's say you grew up in / immediate fam lives in a neighboring state without a real market of its own, say like a day's drive away, and you want this market because it allows you to be closer. You still don't have ties because you aren't actually from the city/state, right? (Didn't go to UG there or actually live there ever or anything.)

if you've visited there or fiance perhaps best friend lived there it would be a super minor tie. I feel like goggle maps can get you any tie lol.

I wonder if having 0 ties in the US makes it easier to break into markets that care about ties.

Hahaha nah, northerner ultimately wants CA or London, me thinks. NYC as a safety. Significant London ties, 0 CA ties, so I hope that doesn't matter.

As someone with 0 actual ties anywhere I sincerely doubt it.

I mean, I want a major market. I'm not sure how difficult CA is to get without ties, especially if you go to LS on the East Coast. That's definitely something I'm worried about.

My immediate family lives in the west and I have relatives in CA and have spent some time there, but I don't think that counts for anything, especially since since so many people we'll be competing with are actually from CA. I'm just hoping since it's a major market it's slightly less sensitive to ties.

I feel like your family living in CA counts for something. Are there any schools excluding HYS and Berk that place well in CA? It'd also help to spend your 1L summer working in your target market.

ETA: To some extent, firms in CA must know that it's a desirable place to live, similar to NYC.

Yeah that's prob it. I think less sensitive to ties maybe (I've seen people say CLS for SoCal, Berk for NoCal). I kinda prefer NoCal since I've never been to SoCal but SoCal's CoL is cheaper (at least LA < SF) and it's sunnier, so you can't go wrong.

CLS, as in Columbia? That's surprising. I was under the impression that they pumped out New Yorkers.

I imagine I'd gun for SoCal unless I went to Stanny and wanted to stay in NoCal or something. I wouldn't feel comfortable shooting for NoCal otherwise. But yeah, can't go wrong either way! Also more large firms with overseas offices in LA I'd imagine, lol.

Take that with a bucket of salt but I've seen it said. If CLS had Chi's clerkship numbers and was less NYC-focused it'd easily be my favorite school by a mile. Some of that might be self-selection though.

Large incoming class but that means they've got course offerings, clinics, journals, research centers and whatnot in any area you're interested in (unlike certain smaller schools) which is a plus for me. Also <3 NYC, especially that area (haters gonna hate) - walking distance to central park and the Met. Just wish clerkships, non-NYC BL, PI, and lol academia placement were a bit stronger.

Those are all good things, but placement into what/where you want is more important I think. That being said, I wouldn't turn down a Hammy, lulz.
