Does being female count in a firm's diversity hiring? Specifically, for 1L SA diversity hire programs.

I had always assumed not, but then I ran across Perkins Coie's 'Diversity Year In Review' brag/report, which does list women in law as a 'diverse' affinity group with their own activities within the firm, the same as the various minority groups, LGBT, etc. It lists that year's 'diverse' hires, and there are plenty of apparently white women listed (too many to assume they're all lesbian, I would think).
http://www.perkinscoie.com/files/FileCo ... %20res.pdf

tl;dr: Can a straight white chick apply for 1L diversity hire programs, or is that as idiotic as I initially assumed, despite what Perkins puts in their shiny pamphlet?

Female=Minority.

Might get extra points if you turn out to be a light skinned arab...........but woman is enough.

Oh and the lesbian comment you made, I think extra points for that if you "discover youself".... :o

Did some forum searching, but I don't think there's a definite answer (though it leans heavily towards no). A lot of people seemed to respond to the question with basically: "lol don't be ridiculous." IAFG noted that women can go to diversity fairs. I also think it was said that women were considered diverse for NALP purposes (which is probably why Perkins includes it in their brochure). There's the other point that women are a minority at the partner level though not so much at the incoming associate level.

I think the general consensus is that you can obviously apply but it is unlikely that you will get it. I mean most minorities (even from good schools) aren't landing diversity SA's so it's not a big loss anyways.

Yeah, that sounds about like what I was figuring. Thanks for doing my forum searching for me.

Just being a female isn't particularly helpful. Your law school class is at least 50/50 female I would wager. In other words, there are no shortage of qualified female applicants for associate positions. There is also no shortage of female associates in biglaw, especially at the junior level. As they drop out of the work force later on it becomes a problem for diversity. So bottom line, no edges for being female.

bull, they still give priority because they want to (even if they don't need to)

That being said, hellzyeah if you fuggly they gonna pass you up. Reality check is the pretty ones somehow make it into the spots they want to be. Why? I dunno, but they do. They just plain straight up do.

Caveat: Don't be fuggly

the things that can't be said in public, generally are still true.

Men hide their boners but guess what, they still have them.

Even chicks prefer pretty girls. Not even for any lesbo reason (not for all anyways) they just do.

Need to see the converse to get the full picture, drive through the trailer park and look for any women that are there over 25. You'll see all you need to see.

Well since I've been mentioned...

White females don't do too terribly well for 1L SAs. Feel free to apply, but find yourself a back-up plan too.

I saw your post in the Mormon thread. I didn't actually know that women qualified for diversity fairs before that.

We are of course all forgetting one key factor here.

Just don't suck.

All BS aside, if you have a 4.0 you will get what you want (even if fuggly)(although non fugly could do it with a 3.0)
Just don't suck and you won't need to worry about race, gender, or species.

Not for 1L. Everyone settles for 1L.

Everyone settles? Spoken like a true champion.

Some "settle" further down the pole than others. Let's put it that way.
