Professional athlete or rich guy who makes investments in things here and there. I grew up wanting to be a doctor but then I didn't like science classes and I didn't want to make decisions that could result in life or death.

I would have stayed in the Army if it weren't for family/gf concerns. For the most part I'm happy and law school has been good to me but every now and then I get very frustrated that I left that path.

Military life has its downsides since it's built around that idea of the 1950s family following you around everywhere. Luckily I've been able to accomplish most of the things I wanted to do before leaving. I'm sure I'll still miss some aspects of it though.HuntedUnicorn wrote:I would have stayed in the Army if it weren't for family/gf concerns. Scrounge up enough money to buy a plot of vineyard somewhere. Or failing that, a wine shop.

Ah, sadly, no. I am probably selling my soul in BigLaw. I know I wouldn't be able to write when I work in BigLaw, but I am hoping maybe I can write a little right now and maybe during 2L and 3L. What about you? Are you going to a related area?Dr_OIT wrote:Happy to see someone else with similar interests! I hope to. Ideally, the long-term plan is to go in-house at a media/entertainment company, after first putting in a few years in BigLaw or MidLaw that has some relevant practice area and/or industry (so ideally, Entertainment Transactions. Or IP transactions, M&A, or even IP lit or employment). By IP, I mean, of course, copyright/trademark/licensing, bc papa got no science background for (or interest in) patent prosecution. Ideal market is NYC, with LA as a potential second.melmelcoolj wrote:Ah, sadly, no. I am probably selling my soul in BigLaw. I don't have a visceral need to write, but I hope it might be possible to teach as an adjunct prof later in (or in the middle of) my career -- and maybe even produce.
Feel free to tell me I'm crazy . (Who knows, I might just end up at a lit firm or doing PI)

Now that I am 5 years away from retirement, what I really want to do is be a ranger or drive the beer cart at a golf course.

If college debt didnt exist I would have loved to spend my gap year as a storm chaser rather than being a paralegal.

I think at this point I would take the Kings with their brand new arena and dump Vlade so I could be the new president of b ball operations. I can't imagine that I would be any worse than him

Except that 0 First Round Draft picks until 2020 is a bit of a deal-breaker.

I would really have loved to be a Librarian / Conservator at one of the Great Libraries; Radcliffe, Bodleian, Codrington, Wren, Christ Church, Longwall, British Library, Library of Congress, Peabody, etc. etc.
Or a professional philosopher, split between teaching and research.
The thing is most of my "dream jobs" involve not just a position, but a position at a particular place or institution - somewhere old, and grand, and beautiful. Perhaps it's a symptom of coming from a relatively young country. I don't think I'd find the job alone stisfying enough if it wasn't connected to some such place.
Law School doesn't necessarily mean the end of either of those paths (though perhaps it is a rather expensive detour) but I think now I think mostly about retiring relatively young and spending (read: wasting) all my money restoring some dilapidated Early Modern chateau in the French countryside. Perhaps farming the land around it too.
